Swim
Comments: I was really nervous about the swim because it was my first OWS and my first time swimming with a wetsuit. I have no fear of the water; I just wasn't confident in my ability to do it due to lack of training time and experience. I got even more nervous watching the waves before me because there was a current pushing everybody off course (see Trish123's post about her DNF) This was my first swim in my new wetsuit which was really great. I tend to sink, and that feeling of bouyancy was fantastic! It felt so much easier to swim, I think mostly because I felt like I was gliding effortlessly between strokes. It almost felt like I was swimming downhill. What would you do differently?: I should have swum faster, but I was taking it easy due to lack of experience and confidence Transition 1
Comments: I tend to get dizzy when I get out of the water, so I took it very easy. It was about 100 yards from the water to my bike and I walked most of the way. I did feel a little dizzy when I was hopping on one leg getting my wet suit off, but it passed quickly. I was slow, but that's OK because I wanted to take it slow. What would you do differently?: Practice taking off wet suit. Bike
Comments: I took it easy the first half because I wasn't sure how I would feel biking after the swim. Then I started to feel a little tight in my left achilles (a chronic problem for me) so I continued taking it easy, even though everything else felt really good. What would you do differently?: Ride faster! I think I will see the Physiatrist in my building about my calf. Transition 2
Comments: Still moving kind of slow. What would you do differently?: Have a greater sense of urgency. Run
Comments: Felt good coming off the bike. Very glad I've been doing a brick every week for a few months. I did not like this course because it was way too flat. I am a slow runner but I am always good on hills. I actually pick up my pace going up hills. Also, a good part of this course was on a concrete boardwalk. I like running on asphalt but not concrete. Post race
Warm down: Walked arond and had some protein shake. What limited your ability to perform faster: I'm slow. Lack of training time. Event comments: This was my very first Tri, so even though I believe that I could have done better I am very pleased. My realistic goal was 1:45 and my dream goal was 1:40 so I am very happy with my 1:36:42. I am thrilled that I was able to do the swim fairly easily, and I now have more confidence to push myself harder in my next race. My biggest problem is now I can't wait until my next race. Also, I am very grateful to everyone here on BT. I do all my training on my own, and you have all helped my learn a lot, and have kept me motivated. Thanks again everyone. Set my alarm for 4:30 but forgot to turn it on. My internal alarm clock (AKA middle aged bladder) woke me at 5:15 and I was on the road by 5:30. Had a protein shake with mixed berries and cream about 2 hours before start time. Got there after they started the pre race instructions. This was my first ever Tri so I was already nervous, but I'm not sure if getting there late was bad because it made me more nervous, or good because I had less time standing around being nervous. At any rate I had plenty of time to set up my transition area.
Long walk from the car and I swam a little waiting for my wave which was last.
