Swim
Comments: Firstly, I got stuck behind these older ladies who couldn't swim straight to save their lives! Got donked on the head too many times and kicked in the guts from some woman who'd stopped and then decided to start up again. Was not happy with the start at all. Once I got into some clear water, I found a rhythm (not mine, just "a" rhythm of sorts) and tried to time my strokes & breathing with the waves. They were rolling waves: the kind that lift you up and the drop you straight back down into the drink; the kind that give me a bit of sea sickness! But once I turned the last bouy, it was great to have their assistance. What would you do differently?: Either start out wide or up front. Because Athenas go off with 40-45, 45-49 and older, it seems I can either get out in front or get choked up at the back. Transition 1
Comments: Not a bad transition, but boy was I dizzy. I really felt the effects of the swim but it righted itself quickly. Had a little trouble with the stirrups on the compression calfies, they wouldn't stay in place, but no biggie. What would you do differently?: Move quicker. Bike
Comments: When the wind was at my back, I shifted onto the big chainring and pushed, averaging around 40kph. Into the headwind, I geared down and probably averaged around 27-28kph. The course seemed really busy. I couldn't not draft at times! And really, some people need to learn to stick to the left. What would you do differently?: Nothing. I had a really good ride. Transition 2
Comments: I wasn't really happy with the time but I had no balance to put on my socks! It was a long run into T2 though. Run
Comments: It just hurt. Every single km felt hard today. The first 2.5km were into the wind and I couldn't catch my breath. After the turn around, with the wind at my back, it was stifling. I just plodded & figured I was still recovering from last week ??? Well, hoping, maybe. The last km was brutal and I don't say this lightly. It was only 5k and yet, it felt like 20! I just couldn't breathe properly at all. What would you do differently?: Not worry about placing and walk! Post race
Warm down: Walking. Lots and lots. Cups of Gatorade & my little pack of jelly belly beans. Had my banana and stretched. What limited your ability to perform faster: Racing a 70.3 one week ago probably didn't help :P I've kept it easy this week - one ride, run & swim. I doubt there was much more I could have done - except nothing - and that's not in my nature. Event comments: I know I came 3rd (I have the medal to prove it, lol) but seriously, it felt like I should have come last. I felt slow and heavy and completely unco. Let's just say that was the race to blow out the short course cob webs and give me the kick in the pants I needed. More speed & strength training coming up. Last updated: 2012-11-04 12:00 AM

Got up far to early, LOL, but did not give in to the temptation of catching 'just a few more minutes' of sleep. Know how well that can turn out! Got to the venue early, got parking sorted then headed to the compound. Set up, checked out the opposition then went and got numbered & wetsuited up.
No real warm up. The race organisers moved the starting position on the beach so it kind of threw me out. Conditions looked a bit tough so I opted not to go out there. Just waded about in the water and tried not to worry too much about the chop.
