Pre-race routine:

Got there nice and early to find a park and sort out parking fees etc. Usual routine - rack bike, set up transition, last minute loo stop, put on wettie, put bag in compound and get down to the water!
Event warmup:

Did a couple of little tester swims. Worked out that it would be a breeze on the way out and tough coming back to shore. Was not wrong!
Swim
  • 14m 52s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 59s / 100 meters
Comments:

Was off to a brilliant start. Felt great and the swim was good too. Stayed out a little wide as I knew the 'open' category behind us would mow me down! Stayed out of the line of fire this way.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing at all.
Transition 1
  • 02m 36s
Comments:

How slow can I go? LOL Long run into transition though - almost 200m.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, it went smoothly enough, just not quickly enough.
Bike
  • 39m 56s
  • 20 kms
  • 30.05 km/hr
Comments:

Okay, the wind was deceptively strong. My new mounting technique worked well (I've finally worked out that I can start pedalling with my right foot) so it was off to a good start. The wind had other ideas. I think I pushed too hard though - even during the ride I could feel the left quad complaining. Should have slowed to save it for the run. But, no.
What would you do differently?:

I did spend a lot of time in the big chain ring - which was fine for some sections of the course. Should've geared down for the hill coming back to transition.
Transition 2
  • 03m 24s
Comments:

Long long run into T2. I was knackered by the time I got to my rack!
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Just move faster.
Run
  • 26m 36s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 19s  min/km
Comments:

My legs were trashed by the 2k mark and it was at that point I realised I'd gone too hard on the bike. I had hoped/dreamed/wished to break 25min but heck, I was lucky to finish with 26mins! I just kept holding on, one foot in front of the other and trying not to lose 2nd place. There was a new girl in our category and I didn't want her to catch me. As it was she ran the quickest 5k of us Athenas. One to watch for next season!
What would you do differently?:

Take it a little easier on the bike. I know I can run down all but 1 or 2 of the other Athenas so an extra minute on the bike won't hurt.
Post race
Warm down:

Lots of walking and gatorade.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Dreaming too big?

Event comments:

Great day out, really. It was the biggest field of competitors I'd seen in a SuperSprint race (about 2200). It was very well organised and lots of activities on. My 2nd place series prize package is awesome ($200 worth of gear from Giant bicycles). Running under 25min for the run would have been the icing on the cake but never mind, there are other races in my future.
