Comments:

Everything about the race went smoothly - ate more than last time, drank enough (but not too much), had the right shoes (who knew Reebok could do running shoes now?), breathing was fine, no major injuries (just a blister and some chafing), and a finishing time 9 minutes faster than last time!

I didn't really think I'd do that well - I was really happy. I still remember doing my first 5k in about 33 minutes, wondering if I'd ever get a 30-minute time. Little did I know, I'd not only get it (my best time is actually about 28), but then keep going for 10 more miles!

What would you do differently?:

Get in a few runs longer than 13 miles before the race. Even or negative splits - I should probably eat even more so I don't slow down.

Post race
Warm down:

Walked steadily for at least 10 minutes

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of energy about 3/4 through - probably need more calories. Could have done more long runs.

Event comments:

Yay for Vertical Horizon on the Beach Stage!

Course: The course wound through local towns, around an army base, and down the main strip. There were local bands playing every mile or so, and lots of locals out cheering and performing and even handing out free beer. The course was fairly flat, with a slight upgrade most of the way and a few slight downhills. I actually feel better on that kind of course as opposed to a flat flat. I kept thinking I was going too fast, that I didn't know if I could hold that pace to the very end, but I kept going anyway. This time was different, because I wasn't looking just to finish. I was only hurting for about the last mile (outer quads - which are still sore), but it wouldn't have been so bad if you couldn't see the finish line in the distance, at the other end of the boardwalk, for a full 2 miles before you actually got there. It really comes down to mental fitness at that point. Dale was a sweetheart and saw me off at the start, then ran to the 2.5 mile mark where I saw him again, then he tried to see me 2 more times, but we somehow missed each other - poor thing ended up waiting in each spot for an hour, and then running 4 miles up and down the boardwalk trying to find me! When he still wasn't at the meeting spot 45 minutes after I finished (I'd already picked up my medal and things & cooled down), I walked back to the hotel (a whole .3 miles) and called his cell phone - 3 times. He finally got the message after I was done stretching (he was still running around at that point), and found me back at the hotel. I wish I'd seen him, and vice versa, but my aunt & uncle were there last time and never saw me after the start. So at least I saw him at one part of the course.
