Swim
Comments: Starting in the last wave had one huge advantage, I was able to take a warm up swim while the other waves were going off. It was GREAT! Got out all the jitters and I was able to get a running start, front of the pack, on the right!. I had NO breathing problems that I've experienced in the past. Went out a little too fast but was able to slow it down. Pretty clear path to the turnaround buoy where it was crowded. Once clear I started bitlateral breathing. There were no buoys marking the line and people were spread out. I had a tuff time sighting. More a function of my failing eyesight than anything else. Overall a great swim, excellent start, 1/2 w/ bilateral breathing, cuda sighted better but I'm thrilled w/ a 13:06 1/2 mile! What would you do differently?: Sight better, bilateral the whole way Transition 1
Comments: Again NYTC uses a disposable chip so Transitions aren't broken out. I hate that! Swim on my watch just over 13 min. so I guess 3:36 incuding the run up the beach, WS removal and picking my up belt /helmet/glasses that were blown off by the wind sounds about right. Tried the shoes on the bike, didn't work out to well. Got one foot in but not the other before the rubber band broke. Pedal starting spinning, momentum stopped, I almost fell over. Got rolling again and got in but definatley lost time. What would you do differently?: Either not put the shoes on the bike or practice more. My rack was only 10 yards from the timing gate so I don't think I wuda lost much time wearing my shoes. I think this is gonna depend on the venue. Just didn't think it was worth it. Bike
Comments: even w/ heavy wind and somewhat tired legs from a long training week I'm pretty happy w/ this ride. The hills were tough as expected but I really hammered the flats and downhills. Course familiarity really helped as I knew where to go for it. Another advantage of starting in the last swim wave, you pass lot of people on the bike. What would you do differently?: Nothing, for a "training" day ride this was as good as it gets. Transition 2
Comments: Total guesstimate (I hate this timimg system). I was able to get my feet out of the shoes while on the bike and kick the leg over. I like the dismount, the shoes on to start, not so much! I did have to sit to get my socks but it felt fast. What would you do differently?: For sprints I may try the sockless thing but gotta practice it first. Run
Comments: Didn't feel this fast (for me). Legs were a little tight and I was passed by decent number of people. The turnaround did come quickly though and I was able to finish strong. All of my long runs made this feel quite short. What would you do differently?: push the middle mile a little harder Post race
Warm down: BS'd w/ Ben. Drank a free Red Bull. Bolted out to pick up my son from baseball practice and avoid wife grief. What limited your ability to perform faster: The fact that I was at the end of a build week and the wind. Event comments: Given that this was unplanned and I was coming off a heavy volume training week I'm thrilled w/ my overall performance. A PB, beating last year's time by 11:28 and finishing top 10 in my AG, 8/39, I can't be happier. Have I mentioned that I hate the timimg system? Irks me that NYTC puts on so many races and and doesn't use a chip that can time transitions. But Harriman does prvide a great venue, Ben was doing it and it's only 15 mins from home, so too easy to pass up. Last updated: 2006-06-08 12:00 AM
