Swim
Comments: This was my first open water swim in 8 years. Unfortunately I didn't have a chance to get in a practice swim. Wasn't prepared for the visual of the size of the course with the buoy markers That got in my head but I knew I'd done the training. Got of to a rocky start. Was not used to all the people in the water. Got kicked in the face once and hit a few times. After a couple hundred yards I figured out what I was doing and found some clear water. Think I swam 1.3 instead of 1.2 but overall very pleased with my performance. Walked / easy jog to T1 What would you do differently?: Practice more OWS!! Transition 1
Comments: Took my time in Transition to dry off and apply sunscreen, ate a gel and drank some heed and off I went What would you do differently?: Time less time Bike
Comments: As I didn't know what to expect on the run I planned to take it easy on this ride. Goal was to average 15 MPH, Course was much hillier than I expected (need to learn to read those elevation profiles better). First 15-20 spun most of the hills and kept heart rate down. Was passed by boat loads of riders but kept to my plan and enjoyed the scenery. Middle miles there were some good rollers where I was able to push the pace and not get into trouble, those were some fun miles. Took it easy the last 10 miles or so to get ready for a hot run What would you do differently?: Now that I know what to expect I'll be able to push a bit harder next ride. Otherwise I had a great ride. Transition 2
Comments: This transition was uneventful. Got ready, had some gel and drink, more sunscreen. What would you do differently?: Go faster Run
Comments: Ok this was much harder than I expected. Hills on the bike took alot out of me and I don't think I put in enough base miles in my training. Ran the first couple of miles and then basically ran when I could and walked when I wanted to. Volunteers and Aid stations where awesome Filled my hat with ice every mile and the iced rags where a slice of heaven. Not much else to say other than this was a long slow run and just wanted to finish. What would you do differently?: Train more!!! Post race
Warm down: Crossed the finish line got my shirt, hat and the coldest bottle of water I've ever drank in my life. Took some pictures with the family and went back to hotel to pass out for a while. Was so happy to have my family there to see me finish and share in this moment with me. FINISHED MY FIRST HALF IM, What limited your ability to perform faster: More base running miles Event comments: While this is a tough course I think I will sign up again next year and hopefully be using it as a prep for my first IM. I decided in December to start doing Tri's again after an 8 year hiatus. I've lost 45 lbs in past 2 years and this was a goal I was intent on completing.
Didn't sleep at all the night before as I was too anxious to rest. When I did sleep I was in the transition setting up my area. Ate a PB&J , banana and coffee for breakfast.
Got to race site early, set up (went much better than my dreams) and relaxed a bit waiting on the family to arrive.
They got there in time to wish me luck and walked down to lake with them.
None, figured I'd have at least 6 1/2 hours for warm-up
