Comments: Pretty congested for the first 200 meters or so and into the first turn. I was a bit conservative in the start and had a hard time finding open water so I took the first bouy wide and the second turn a little closer. Then to stay out of the way, I tried to stay way inside the course and found some good water. Things would get congested in most of the turns. Did a good job sighting every 10 or so strokes. Only found myself off course on one sighting. Not bad. What would you do differently?: Go out a bit more aggressive at the start. Transition 1
Comments: I didn't have a chance to use a rubber band to get my bike shoe in a good position for the start. So I fidgeted around with my shoe for about 5 seconds before I could get my foot in. This was also the first time using my garmin edge 500 bike computer. But I also left my garmin watch in my helmet like I usually do. I fidgeted around with it for some reason and just threw it in my back jersey pocket. I should have just left it for the run. What would you do differently?: Need to put a rubberband on the shoe to get it in perfect position when I jump on the bike. Also leave my watch in TA and put it on on the run. Bike
Comments: Decent bike, but with being sick and traveling, didn't get much riding in three weeks before the race. Started out good, my heartrate stayed in the 160s most of the time (which is high for me). Got a little frustrated watching some guys draft and camp in the left, so I exerted a ton of energy to just get past them as they were slowing me down and I couldn't get around them. Wind for the first 3.5 miles wasn't terrible. Wind at your back for the next 7 was great, but the last 2 miles on each loop seemed pretty tough. I need more hills. Transition 2
Comments: Only issue here that cost me 6 seconds was a sock that was inside out that I had to mess around with. What would you do differently?: Make sure my socks are laid out well. Run
Comments: I have not had a good run in 4 weeks due to my illness. I just grinded this out despite the fact that my heart rate was going through the roof. I just tried to keep a good pace, slow down in the rest areas and get to the end. My original goal coming into this race was sub 2:20, but with my lung congestion, I revised my goal to sub 2:30. With about a mile left, I was at 2:22, so I really pushed myself for the last mile. I learned a lot about how I can push myself. I'll take that away for the next race when I'm healthy and shooting for sub 2:20. :) What would you do differently?: Stay healthy. Post race
Warm down: Stretched a bit. Also lost my Garmin 500 Bike GPS. :( If anyone found one, let me know. What limited your ability to perform faster: Bronchitis that was slowly clearing up over the past 2 weeks. Event comments: HFP does a great job with organization and logistics. As always, a well run race. One negative: I usually don't care about the race shirts as they aren't a deal breaker with a race, but the shirts for this race (with a patch on them!?!?), are unwearable for training or almost anything (It's non absorbent so I can't even use it as a rag). I was sick with Bronchitis for 3 weeks before the race and was still feeling some tightness in the lungs, so I knew it was going to be a tough day. I got up a little later than normal. Wasn't on the road until 6:10 or so. Had my usual bagel with coffee and lots of water. Didn't get to Deer Creek until 7:10 and the line for packet pick up was fairly long. By the time I started setting up my TA, it was already 7:40 or so and the Women's only tri was starting to come through transition. I did my best to stay out of their way in transition.
I didn't get a chance to get any OWS in prior to this race, so headed down to the water and got a good amount of swimming in. There was a fair amount of chop in the water from the wind and I swallowed a bit of water just during the warmup. Good thing I did that, or I would have been surprised after the second turn into the chop.
