Swim
Comments: My shoulder was feeling very good, so I took it out pretty hard. In retrospect I probably went too hard, because I was more fatigued than usual when I got out of the water. What would you do differently?: Not start out too fast. However, I did not want to get caught at the back of my waver either. Transition 1
Comments: This transition really sucked, what can I say. The racks were numbered, so my spot was in the sand, not on the pavement. It seemed like an eternity to get my freakin' wetsuit off. Next time I will use pam spray, not bodyglide on my lower legs. What would you do differently?: Bag the freakin wetsuit. Bike
Comments: I was a little worried here, because it took about 6 miles for me to get some serious speed going. Maybe it was the constant headwind, or the fact I went out a little too hard on the swim, but I was almost ready to just say screw it, and try to avg 20mph. Finally at mile 6 or 7, the gel I ate before the swim kicked in, and I started passing lots and lots of other racers. I finally settled in at 21 or 22+mph, and at points got up to 27 or 28mph. At one point some chippie passed me, then we played cat and mouse for about 10 miles. I knew I would have a good bike split now! What would you do differently?: nothing Transition 2
Comments: T2, and I still suck. Had trouble getting my bike shoes off, and getting my running shoes on. I will blame the sand transition area on this one! Run
Comments: I felt pretty good on the run, but I put a lot of pressure on myself to top a 7:25 mile from 2 weeks ago. I think I was running about 7:15's due to my estimate of where the water stop was 2mile??. Unfortunately, I started to fade with about 3/10's to go. I assumed the finish was where it was 2 years ago. What would you do differently?: nothing. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: I think I started to lose some mental focus early on the bike leg do to my fatigue on the swim and poor transition. My buddy, Maxmattmick was not at this race, so MAYBE I didnt go 100% on the first part of the bike or the last 1/2 mile of the run. I also I put too much pressure on myself to top my run performance of a 7:25 mile! Event comments: Yes- I'm pissed at myself for not entering as a Clydesdale. Even though I'm barely over 200lbs. If I had, I would have placed 3rd, among some strong triathletes. However, I was very happy with my performance and overall placing among some freakin' good atheletes! got up at 4:45 am, took a hot shower, did my tp massage ball routine, and watched tv until 5:10. Hit the road and drove to the race. Oh yeah- ate my normal pb&j bagel and drank gatorade.
ran about 5 minutes on the trail, ate a clif bag,and just waited for the race to start late of course!! I woofed down a gel before the swim.
