Pre-race routine:

This was a warmup race for Ironman Texas for me and also my first 70.3. I used my theoretical Ironman pre-race nutrition of 1K calories at 2AM then a couple hundred more at 4 before the race.
Swim
  • 39m 3s
  • 2078 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Transition 1
  • 08m 47s
Comments:

There is a quarter mile run after the swim to T1 and I just slow jogged it - but everyone else was flying. I'm not sure that it was worth risking slipping or cutting your foot for 20 seconds - but thats just me. Wait until you see how slow I am on the bike, then you will understand.
What would you do differently?:

I took my sweet time doing everything - but I never put on more sunscreen & I forgot my arm coolers. Both were costly mistakes. I also took a big water bottle with me full of fresh water to dump on myself (and down my shorts) to avoid any chafing. I know it was silly - but trading 10 seconds for comfort was worth it.
Bike
  • 3h 15m 50s
  • 55.92 miles
  • 17.13 mile/hr
Transition 2
  • 05m 42s
Comments:

Bathroom break included in this transition time and I also applied some sunscreen bc I felt my arms cooking on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Apply sunscreen to the area between my watch & hand - I totally missed it and I cooked for it. Its been two weeks and my skin is still red right there.
Run
  • 2h 03m 48s
  • 13.05 miles
  • 09m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

Thank God the bike was over. This was my first 70.3, so it was my first time really needing to focus on nutrition. I also wanted to make sure to fend off the (overly hyped) heat during the run. I started out running about 9:30 pace but I was spending 30 seconds (at least) at the aid stations waiting for ice/water/Gu. I felt really good so I kept picking it up and then I ran the last 7 miles at 8 min pace - but I kept spending 30 seconds per mile at the aid stations. Nothing makes you feel like an amateur then realizing accidentally ruined your running split by stopping too much/too long at the aid stations.
What would you do differently?:

If you are a strong runner and don't mind heat much, this is a great course and I wish I had hammered the run. I made a big rookie mistake with the aid stations, but I think that any strong runner can really make up a lot of time on this course. I went from 823 overall to 602 - including all my wasted time. Between the scenery, the crushing hills and the ocean breeze, this has to be one of the best (and most challenging) courses I've ever run.
Post race
Warm down:

Gave my wife a hug then got a massage

What limited your ability to perform faster:

focusing on my IM HR zones in a HIM.

Event comments:

Overall I thought this was a great early season race. It was my first 70.3 but relative to the DC-area triathlons, it was significantly better. DC tris won't even start up until mid-April so I was able to get a pretty good jump on my training for the year.

Course: I really enjoyed this swim course with (mostly) clear calm salt water. It was open to competitors in the days before, so there were no surprises. It was wave starts, which meant there wasn't much chaos in the beginning. The part of the swim in the lagoon was calm and fast. It got a little rougher after the bridge (last 200 meters maybe) and a lot of people really started to slow down in the rollers. Its shallow water under the bridge and that freaked some people out. I was probably middle of the pack before the rolling waves set in and I used everyone else's misery to power through to the finish. I have been using the total immersion swimming style and I thought it served me really well. Overall great swim course!

Course: Really hot bike course with some switching winds. I am terrible on the bike (not sure why) so I just focused on following my nutrition plan and getting off the bike comfortably. The one downside of the course was that the water bottles they were handing out (aqua fina maybe?) were gushing water from under the cap when you squeezed them. Also, the last aid station was almost out of water when I rolled through so I had to stop so they could get me some water. While I'm slow on the bike I finished essentially just behind middle of the pack overall (800/1400), so I bet it was a dry ride for the last third. The only other thing worth noting is the LONG hike from the far aid station on the course back to T2. The map makes it look like you can get more water at the aid station near the beginning of the lap - but its on the other side of the road. People were asking for other athletes to share their water as we were getting close to San Juan bc a headwind & the hot sun had really slowed everyone down (or at least us Back of Packers)

Course: Great course. I really enjoyed it and I actually made my wife go walk the course with me a couple of days later just so she could see how pretty it was. It was definitely hot but I didn't think it was crazy (maybe low 80s?). There were a lot more hills than I expected in the carribean but none of them had to be walked.
