Swim
Comments: Wind made for considerable head-on chop and current on the outbound which made it feel like a real battle to make forward motion. Right turn improved greatly, then the inbound was sailing in. Transition 1
Comments: A little slow getting on the bike, but good start and easy into shoes. What would you do differently?: Practice mounting and don't dawdle. Bike
Comments: Last year I drank water only and suffered a cramp on the run. Lesson learned, accomplished and improved speed by 2 mph. Feel like I pushed the right amount on the bike to not hurt my run. Transition 2
Comments: Good enough. Fidgeted with my shoes a bit to be sure the tongue was flat after noticing the edges tend to curl in. Run
Comments: I conquered my mental battle of walk breaks (other than walking through aid stations because I can't run and drink). No cramping, no heat meltdowns -that's a win for me. In the last 2 miles I felt the arch area of my shoe rubbing my foot and knew it was going to be ugly. Just kept going. After the finish I had to get the shoe off immediately. I had a bloody open wound on the arch of my foot. 4 days later I'm still bandaged to be able to wear shoes. My Newton Distance is not going to work for sockless running. Will have to go back to my old Newton Lady Isaacs that were fine for that. What would you do differently?: Wear shoes that have a sockliner? It wasn't a problem in my previous runs. I think it was from wet squishy shoes. I need to continue working on running speed. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: As always, my weight and fitness level. I was physically tired from the oly the previous Sunday and didn't feel mentally prepared. On the drive over, my stomach felt nervousy and I wasn't feeling it. But I hit the water and stopped thinking. I just started going. No tummy troubles during the race and I let my consistent training carry me through. This was a 12 min improvement over last year and I made the corrections to nutrition and physical output to set up a good (for me) run. Getting to my goal weight and continuing to improve my fitness will get me where I want to go. Event comments: This is a great local race. Plenty of volunteers, aid stations and post race food is always good. Last updated: 2013-04-25 12:00 AM
