Pre-race routine:

arrived with my friend Sara. plenty of time to set up transition area, find potty, chat with a couple of people in my assigned area.
Event warmup:

looked nervously around at all the amazing athletes. felt chunky and alone. my pit crew was a no-show before the swim.
Swim
  • 24m 50s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

Sooooo.... I suck at sighting in open water. I tried to freestyle and every time I'd look around I was veering right. Gave up on that and decided to just finish the dang course alternating between side stroke and breast stroke.
What would you do differently?:

OWS practice. Try swimming in a wetsuit
Transition 1
  • 05m 44s
Comments:

took my time. dried off, chugged water. got wet top off and put on dry top w/ race number. dried off some more. put on socks and shoes. scanned horizon for friends. Didn't find any familiar faces.
What would you do differently?:

Not be so exhausted after swim.
Bike
  • 48m 33s
  • 12 miles
  • 14.83 mile/hr
Comments:

I love biking. I was amazed that my legs continued to make circular motions after such a discouraging swim. But the sun was shining. The course was mostly level, and I was still making forward progress. The view from I-90 of Lake Washington and Mt. Rainier were Stunning. By the turn around I was smiling and nodding at every race attendant and motorcycle cop. When I rounded the final bend to park entrance I spotted Chris and Lori. Got shouts of encouragements.
What would you do differently?:

Ride more. My pace was kinda slow.
Transition 2
  • 03m 1s
Comments:

shoes already on. I managed to scrape the heck out of my right calf with my chain ring, so I'm sporting war wounds.
Run
  • 33m 24s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

I shuffled along at my slow jog. Determined to walk as little as possible. I was daunted by "the big hill", and had to walk uphill. Thankfully at the top they had glucose & water and words of encouragement "just 3/4 mile to go". I jogged back down hill, and on the way down spotted Sara heading up hill. We shouted and waved and my batteries were recharged again. There was a guy with a tamborine and shouts of 1/4 more mile... I realized I was finishing! Then 100 yrds from the finish Sara caught up with me and said "Are we gonna do this together?". Sure! I broke into a real run and we headed for the big banner and announcers and shouting friends and cheering crowds.
What would you do differently?:

run more often, run longer distances
Post race
Warm down:

Hugged Chris and Lori. Got my picture taken with my commemorative medal... all sweaty, stinking, red-faced, and Happy.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

training time. on the upside... i have Tons of Room for Improvement.

Event comments:

tons of volunteers. city very cooperative. well organized.
