![]() Swim
Comments: This is the shortest triathlon swim course I have ever done. Swimmers get sent in to the water at 5 second intervals then swim out to a buoy around the pier and back to shore. I was towards the end of my heat but quickly caught up to swimmers ahead of me. It was crowded and I had to swim around several people. I was able to swim along the rope out to the buoy, make the turn and swim along the rope on the way back to shore. I was able to complete the entire swim portion in freestyle without issue. The only difficulties were other swimmers. I passed at least 6 people who were floating, doing backstroke, etc. What would you do differently?: I would probably go in the first heat next time. It seemed as if many of the people who had chosen my heat were weaker swimmers. This definitely affected my ability to swim since I had to go around many of them. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: No transition times for this race. What would you do differently?: I really need to get different laces on my shoes. I have mountain bike shoes and the laces slow me down! Also, I'm considering ditching the socks. Drying my feet to put on socks adds time to T1 as well. Getting my gloves on went more smoothly today then in my last triathlon. ![]() Bike
Comments: This is a beautiful bike course that goes along the water most of the way. It is deceivingly hilly. What would you do differently?: I felt really good on the bike course. I kept a good pace the entire time, shifting went well. I was able to drink without slowing down too much. I passed about 12 people on the bike course. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: No transition times for this race. What would you do differently?: Once I got off the bike I shouted out my number and race volunteers grabbed the bike from me as well as my helmet and gloves. All I had to do was run to grab my shoes from another volunteer who had them ready for me. I love my Zoot shoes, no laces! ![]() Run
Comments: I started the run conservatively, gradually picking up my pace each mile. There were water stops at each mile marker which was great. While I didn't drink any water, I did dump a cup over my head at each stop. At the Allegheny Endurance stop the volunteers threw water on me as I ran by, it felt so good! I had less than half a mile left and the crowd began to cheer me on. I saw Nancy who shouted lots of encouragement to me and really helped me kick my run into high gear. I turned the corner to the finish and pushed as hard as I could. What would you do differently?: I probably could have pushed a bit harder on the run. I ran about 10 min/miles, which is fairly slow for me, even during a triathlon. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Immediately after crossing the finish line there were two veterans at the end of the chute. They both shook my hand and said, "Congratulations, you're my hero!" This was such a nice way to end the race! I was so touched since in fact, the veterans are the real heroes! What limited your ability to perform faster: I felt strong during all three events today; in fact, I improved my time in each event from last year. Overall, I cut off 8:03 off last year's time! I definitely wish I had more time to devote to training but that will come as the kids get older. Event comments: The race today ran so much smoother than last year! The race director and timing company were awesome. Last updated: 2013-05-15 12:00 AM

Woke up around 6:30am. Ate a bagel with smart balance and almond butter. Drank a cup of OJ. I brought a cup of coffee and a banana with me to the race site.
I had picked up my race packet the night before but still had to get my timing chip and go to body marking. I also bagged my running shoes and handed them in to the race volunteers to ensure they went to T2. (This triathlon is point to point).
Next, I set up my bike transition area. This race has limited bike racks and to avoid the crowding I chose to set up against a nearby tree.
After getting the bike set up I headed down to the beach area to do some light stretching. I taped my knee, ate my banana, drank an energy pouch and ate about 30 energybits.
Shortly after this it was time for the race meeting. After the meeting I headed back to the car to get my wetsuit on, grab my goggles and cap and headed down to the beach.
I got in the water while the first heat of swimmers was lining up. I went under water and got some inside my suit. I swam out to the pier and back for my swim warm up. The water was warm and clear. I felt good about the swim and confident I would have few issues today.
