Pre-race routine:

Got up early and drove to the race site. Registered and got marked, chip etc. Put on my new wetsuit and went to swim a bit.

Event warmup:

Some easy swimming. Felt very buoyant. I usually rent sleeveless so the sleeves were nice. It felt warmer in the water than the air.

Swim
  • 18m 3s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 25s / 100 meters
Comments:

Started off a bit too fast and took a while to find my spot and get in a groove. Once I rounded the first buoy I felt fine and started to focus on form and getting it done. Overall my body just felt really tired. I stupidly ate a Larabar while waiting around for the start and so I had a side stitch from the second buoy to the end. Annoying. I'm not sure if this includes my run to transition. Last year took me 21:32 so I'm improving!
Transition 1
  • 02m 51s
Comments:

Felt a little lightheaded and struggled to get wetsuit off over the timing chip.

I forgot to bring a towel and they had just cut the grass so my feet were wet and covered in grass/sand.
What would you do differently?:

Bring a towel to wipe feet etc.
Bike
  • 1h 09m 22s
  • 30 kms
  • 26.03 km/hr
Comments:

My legs were tired after training hills for four solid weeks with no recovery. The goal was to use this as a training ride but it was hard to relax in to it with everyone passing me. Who needs music when the chorus you hear is "On your left!" Being at the back of the pack gives you an interesting view... people really should do a wet water test with their tri shorts. I've never seen so many butt cracks!!

In spite of it all I managed to stay above 25km/hr which isn't bad for me. Last year I was faster but then my piriformis flared up and I had a brutal run. This year I kept it all in check and felt fine after the race so mission accomplished.
Transition 2
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

Feet were numb.
Run
  • 47m 30s
  • 7.5 kms
  • 06m 22s  min/km
Comments:

I'm not very confident running on rough terrain and my feet were numb so the first trail part I just kept an easy pace and then picked it up once I hit the road. Pushed the pace a bit but my piriformis & IT band were a bit tight so not too hard. It was a comfortable run... drank water and enjoyed the view.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate a burger and had some chocolate milk.

Event comments:

Very pretty course and a race I'll probably do again. A good start to the season.

I don't know if it's because I'm a same day registrant and not in the system but my stats still aren't fully posted so this is based on what I see now and might change.

Goal was to use this race as a trial run and try out the new wetsuit etc so pleased with my effort and the results. Crazy that even when strong I'm still at the bottom of the pack. So many fast people out there!
