Run
Comments: I ran this race last year and I was really trying to push myself for a big improvement from last year's time. (2:45:18) My goal was to do it in 2:30. I ran a marathon in April with ITBS issues and had a miserable time (in all ways). I wanted to redeem myself with this race. My husband ran this race also. This was his first half- marathon and his second race ever. (he ran a 5k in July). He only started running in June, so this was a big leap for him and a lot of people were betting against him. To make matters worse, he woke up with the startings of a cold. We ran together for the first 4 miles and then he had to walk a little. He knew I wanted to push myself so he urged me to keep going and not wait on him. I ran ahead, but felt a little guilty. I'm not sure I could have run my first half mary w/out someone along side me. Runnergirl ran with me the entire time for my first and it helped so much. I put the guilt aside and kept running. I know there will be races where I can put my goals aside for someone else but this wasn't the one. I needed to be selfish for this one. I felt really good for the first 10 miles and then my knees started to feel pretty bad. My IT band started to talk a little and I got scared it would act up again, but it made it through. Once I passed the 10 mile mark and realized I was going to make my goal time, I pushed a little harder to see if I could make it to 2:20. (my younger sster's goal time for this race). Not quite, but I did improve my overall time from last year by more than 20 minutes, and beat my goal time by almost 6 minutes. I'm pretty happy. My next half-marathon is in 3 months and this time I'm shooting for 2:15. What would you do differently?: I would have had the shuttle pick us up on time so I didn't feel so rushed at the start. I also would have worn a visor. I had sweat dripping in my eyesfor most of the race. Post race
Warm down: Got my ice cold towel, fluids, and went to meet my friends and family. Hung out on the beach, had a few beers, and enjoyed the bands. What limited your ability to perform faster: Genetics? Event comments: I had a blast. Can't wait for next year! Last updated: 2006-06-28 12:00 AM

Alarm went off at 5am. Hit snooze until 5:15. Had a cup of coffee, dressed, gathered my things, walked to shuttle station and waited for 45 minutes to get picked up. Last year the shuttle came at 5:50, so we wanted to be ready. This year it was late! I ate a pop tart while I waited and chatted with the other runners. We arrived at the start 10 minutes before start time.
Running to find the UPS trucks to hand off our gear (they had already left)so 5 of us handed our bags to Saint John (my new nickname for Runner girl 29's sweet boyfriend)and took off for the porta potties. Grabbed a water and chugged it while in line. Went to get in the corral with my husband.
