Swim
Comments: There's nothing like standing on the shore looking out over the beautiful calm water on a sunny morning. Then you look down and see a tampon applicator that's washed ashore eeewwwww! The water was cool but refreshing. I opted to wear my wetsuit. Lots of girls but well spaced. I'll never understand the swimmers that go to the front but do breast stroke - kicking everyone and making it difficult to swim past. Perhaps it's a strategic move on their part. My body was tired and achy from the boxing class so I just focused on long strong strokes and didn't really 'race' until I'd passed the third buoy. There was a shallow part on the way to the finish that I stood up on and did dolphin dives from but then it got deep again - threw me off - finished swimming until my fingers hit the sand. I finished 13/21 for my age group but this was my slowest swim of the season. Not sure if that includes the long run to transition. Makes sense if it does. What would you do differently?: Taper before the race vs. doing an intensive boxing workout! Transition 1
Comments: I had a fantastic spot in transition literally steps from the bike out. Where I screwed up was not being organized enough. My helmet was so tight I fiddled with the dial trying to get it on my head. Then noticed my glasses were broken and attempted to fix them before giving up. What would you do differently?: Check bike tires, helmet, etc before I pack for the race. Bike
Comments: Haven't been on my bike in a month so after the first loop my bottom was starting to complain. Just no power in my legs. 5K in I just enjoyed the ride and tried not to think about how slow I was. What would you do differently?: Ride my bike in preparation. No clue what else. I'm a slow rider so this time is pretty typical for me. Transition 2
Run
Comments: I hate running on grass so I took it slow. Thankfully they had a screen that counted your loops because sure enough at one point I was asking myself "Is this 3? or 4?" as I tend to zone out while running. I would have liked to have run this in 30 minutes or less but my legs were having none of it. I felt slow but it seems the course was actually 5.4km which is probably why. What would you do differently?: Not run 19km two days before the race. Post race
Warm down: Grabbed some chocolate milk and collected my t-shirt. Watched people accept their awards. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of race specific training. Event comments: I like Multisport events but was a bit surprised at what felt like a lack of organization. I received my bib # the night before but couldn't find information on the wave start times. It wasn't until I arrived on the island I learned I wasn't going to start until 9:12. I thought it would be shortly after 8am! There were some other little things that threw me off. Like not getting the timing chip until we entered the beach (actually not an issue) but I thought I was missing the bike/helmet stickers which usually come with the timing chip. Turns out we didn't have any so I just wore my race bib on the bike (which I usually put on before the run). Just quirky little things like that but nothing that ruined the day. It's great that everyone is accessible and the after race event seemed to run smoothly. Last updated: 2013-06-28 12:00 AM

Woke at 5am and had breakfast, got changed and then made my way to the ferry dock. Got there at 6am and caught the first ferry over. Then learned my wave didn't start until 9:12am!
Checked out the water, got a great transition spot, explored the expo... for 3 hours.
Swam a bit and watched the other waves head out.
