Pre-race routine:

Got to Disney Friday night. Checked into the hotel. Sat morning put my bike together and went to the Contemporary to register. Since it was early, it was empty and there were no lines. Lame goodie bag, not even a water bottle or energy bar. Likewise the Expo, very lame. I have been to local sprint races that had better expos. Bought some Co2 cartridges. Drove the bike course and then went to get my bike to bring over to transition to rack. Walked the 3/4 mile path to the transition. I really can't figure out why they did not have the registration at the transition area. It was at the same place as the HIM and it was very convenient. Spent a few hours at the Magic Kingdom and then met up with Sue, Janice, Sharon, Bob and Richard for dinner at Rainforest Cafe. Slept really good Sat night
Event warmup:

Got to the transition area about 6:20. Set up pretty quickly and went to the beach to wait for the start. Found Sue and just waited. There was a bit of disorganization and I never heard them actually call my wave to go down. I just saw a bunch of bright pink caps heading towards the start and followed them.
Swim
  • 42m 23s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 35s / 100 yards
Comments:

Typical swim for me. I have really not put too much effort into the swim so I was not pleased or disappointed. My sighting was really good. I was mostly alone, in between packs so while there was not much opportunity to draft, I did not get beaten and banged up either.
What would you do differently?:

Spend more time int he pool. In the pool, I breath every other stroke but in OW, I breath every stroke. When I try every other I get all messed-up. If I could just master that I know I would take noticeable time off of the swim.
Transition 1
  • 04m 21s
Comments:

Seems like a long transition, but right out of the swim you cross the mat and then had to run all the way to the back of the transition area to get in. It was a pretty long run but at least my bike was racked towards the back so once inside transition, I did not have to run far to the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, I am please with this transition

Comments:

The course was about 4 miles short. As soon as we hit the turnaround, I knew it would be. Kind of disappointed in this. Since it was an out and back, why did they not take us an extra 2 miles up the road before the turnaround? Another complaint before I talk about my performance, for about the first 2 miles of the course, there was 2-way traffic with bikers going out and bikers coming in. It was impossible to pass and dangerous at times. When I went out, the lead riders were coming back and those guys would not give an inch to let someone pass going in the other direction. It was a little scary at times. I don't know what else could have been done to make this better. Then, on the way back into the transition, we encountered the same problem only this time it was 2-way traffic with bikes and runners. Some fo the runners were side by side which left little room for the bikes and almost no opportunity to pass. This really frustrated me because I think I could have passed about 10 people if the runners were not coming at me. There was also a VERY noticeable lack of USAT marshalls on the course. At one point, it looked like a Tour de France paceline on the other side of the road. Aside from that, I was very happy with my ride.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really as far as performance goes. I just wish we did not have to fight the two way trafic and i would have liked to see marshalls. On the positive side, there were lots of police at every intersection.
Transition 2
  • 02m 16s
Comments:

Good transition for me. I really want to practice taking my feet out of the shoes while on the bike. I also forgot to put my race # on before leaving.
What would you do differently?:

Comments:

It was HOT, very HOT but I guess my training in Texas helped because I had the run of my life (so far). Aside from the aid station, I did not walk at all! As soon as I started running out of the transition area I know this was going to be good. My legs felt great and I told myself that I was not going to stop running! I would have liked to see an aid station right out of the transition area. The first one was not until a mile or so in. There were also no distance markers so although I had a rough idea of where I was, I would have liked confirmation.
What would you do differently?:

Just keep runnung and keep getting better. I also need to come up with better songs that run through my head as I am running. For some reason, I had this one Jimmy Buffet song that would not leave.
Post race
Warm down:

Crossed the line, hugged Steve and got something to drink. Found Sue, Janice, Wendy, Renee and Becka. Sue and Janice headed back and we stayed a while waiting for the us lines to go down. Got to see Chris (Rugbykid) cross the line. After about an hour, got the bus back to the transition area. Packed my stuff and made the 3/4 mile walk back to the hotel.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing really, overall I am really happy with my personal performance.

Event comments:

Ok...

1. Logistically this was inconvenient. The registration should have been at the race site. You had to rely on busses or other forms of Disney transportation to get to places.

2. The people at registration did not seem trained. When I got the final instructions, my wave (athena) was not listed. I figured I was starting with my age group, but nobody could tell me if I was then competing as AG or if I was still competing as Athena. They also just handed my the wristband and did not put it on. I thought the idea of the wristbands were to insure that only the registered athlete goes into transition.

3. They changed the start times about 3 times including (i think) right before the race. I had no idea when I was starting

4. 2-way traffic on the bike. DANGEROUS

5. No marshalls anywhere on the course. Sure, I could have drafted too but I know that my times are legitimate, without help.

6. Could have been one more aid station on the run

So, aside from that, I had the race of my life. I love the Disney atmosphere and spending time at the parks. Will I do this race again next year...maybe, if I am sure that they address the issues of the course length, logistics and especially safety. I really hope they fix the issues that they had this year. I love to race in Florida so maybe I will try to find one in Tampa or by the beach. It's funny thought because the HIM used the same transition area and the same roads but there were none of the issues we had here. Disney needs to make things more convenient for the participants and mostly the issues that I feel were a safety hazzard like the drafting and the 2-way traffic.
