Swim
Comments: Even though there were only 100 people in the wave, I started too far back and got caught behind some big kickers. I'm not totally sure why the flutter kick is so rare in these races... I had trouble breathing about halfway through because my breaths became synchronized with some guy's wake. I was able to readjust but I swallowed a bit of water. Once the water was clear of frog kickers, I was able to swim a lot faster. What would you do differently?: Start at the front of the pack. I should have swum bilaterally too, because I'm faster that way. Additionally, I could swim without a wetsuit next time. 800 meters is such a short distance, I'm sure the advantage of a wetsuit is negated by the extra time it causes in T1. Transition 1
Comments: My wetsuit came off fine, but my race belt was all twisted up and I wasted time messing with it. At the bike mount I had a lot of trouble getting my first cleat in. What would you do differently?: I'll make improvements to my race belt so it doesn't twist. I should learn how to do a cyclocross mount, because my transitions are ass-slow. Bike
Comments: My goal was to go 18 mph. I went 20, but the mount and dismount cost me several seconds (I'll say 32 of them). My stomach ached during the bike. It's related to either drinking too much or not enough, but I still can't figure out which one it is. Very few people passed me, and I regained the lead quickly when they did. It was a good bike. What would you do differently?: Maybe I'll actually train. I have never before gone faster than 15 mph in training (partly because Seattle has crappy bicycling conditions), so I would say I'm happy with today's performance. Transition 2
Comments: There was a bit of a traffic jam from people not willing to run with their bikes. What would you do differently?: Things went fine, even though they were slow. My racing flats have long laces, so I guess I can speed things up by using Yanks or something. Run
Comments: My legs were tired, but I moved up the field quickly. The hill kicked my butt though. Luckily I was able to keep moving up it, but after I came back down I lost my competitive spirit. This guy that I passed coming out of the transition caught me, and I decided not to go after him. I was sorta tired. After I saw the 3-mile mark I did go after him, and I almost kicked him down, but he beat me by 1 second. So, I'm kinda mad that I didn't stay with him. What would you do differently?: Next time I won't let people pass me. That dude was the only one to go by me during the run, but I should have been able to take back the lead. Post race
Warm down: I jogged and then stretched out. I walked along the course to see other people come in. What limited your ability to perform faster: Super crappy transitions. All of my times were faster than I anticipated, but I squandered those advantages by being slow in T1 and T2. Event comments: Well...it's a PR by, like, 10 minutes. And I can see where to improve. I biked to the race site, because I'm hardcore. It was about 10 miles, and it was a little chilly.
I drank gatorade on the way to the race, and a GU 15 minutes before the start. I did only mild stretching because I was short on time.
