Pre-race routine:

This was my first triathlon.

Note: This race is Bike-swim-run.
Swim
  • 13m 14s
  • 400 meters
  • 03m 19s / 100 meters
Comments:

Terrible - could not catch my breath and ended up doing backstroke most of the way
What would you do differently?:

Walk (rather than jog) from T1 to pool to get HR down. And of course more swim training.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

T1 (bike-swim) included in bike time
Bike
  • 42m 13s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 17.62 mile/hr
Comments:

Mass bike start in waves. Hard to keep no-draft distance for first 1/2 mile, but then the climbing starts and the pack thins out quickly.

Very familiar course to me. I ride part of it on my daily commute. Started running out of gas on the return climbs.
What would you do differently?:

More training time in the saddle.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

T2 (swim-run) included in run time.
Run
  • 34m 21s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 11m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

No real problems here, this is about the pace I anticipated. Legs felt better at the finish than they did coming out of T2.
What would you do differently?:

More run training.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Limited aerobic base resulting from too many years of sedentary life.

This event is right in my backyard so I am sure I will do it every year.

Event comments:

Claims to be the longest continuously held triathlon in the US. Course altitude ranges from 7200 to 7800 ft.

Course: (bike was 1st event) Hilly out-and-back with climbs in both directions, but more climbing on the outbound leg than the return leg. First mile is on local streets past Los Alamos National Laboratory, then 5 miles around the border of the laboratory to the turn around. Course is on public 2-lane highway and open to traffic, but there is very little on Saturday mornings. Very scenic route through high-desert Ponderosa forest.
