Swim
Comments: The swim was my biggest concern and ended up being the best part of my day. Once in the water made my way to the deeper water and stayed there for the long straight. It was easy to tell by the drastic change in temp and color of the water(deeper water stronger current) Had plenty of landmarks along the right side and was able to stay straight by sighting off them on my breath stroke. had to do minimal pop up stighting ahead. With only one buoy 1 1/2 mi down course it would have helped anyway. I'm a slow swimmer and was expecting 1:30-1:45 So was happy to get out under 1:30 What would you do differently?: Where tinted goggles, sun was really bad on right side breathing. Transition 1
Comments: Took time in T1 to get everything right and get cool weather gear on. Just wanted to be under 15minutes. What would you do differently?: Maybe not as much cool weather gear Bike
Comments: All my training and race strategy was based off heart rate and building endurance. My endurance exceeded my durability. I pushed too hard early on the bike and was @ 1/2 SN just under 3hrs and that's when I started to experience IT problems in right leg. Kept pushing and pain kept building and started to drop heel to compensate for the pain. By mile 70 Achilles and knee were pretty painful, kept going and had my "moment" at mi 90. had to get off the bike and could barely walk. Got my head straight and back on the bike and just pedaled with left leg the last 22mi. That took 2hrs What would you do differently?: Ease up on output and stop at all aid stations for a few minutes get off the bike stretch and walk around. It would have paid off for me in the end. Transition 2
Comments: In a lot of pain and time was going to be an issue on run so didn't waste any in T2 What would you do differently?: at this point nothing Run
Comments: Problems on bike kept me from being able to run. Right IT band was in full lock up, Achilles was very painful, was worried about cutoff times so I limped a 3hr 13.1 first lap to make first cutoff this bought me about 40 extra minutes on the final cutoff. Walked with right leg straight and about 4 paper cups smashed flat and in my shoe as a heel wedge to take stress off achilles What would you do differently?: Better strategy on the bike so I would have been able to run. If running I would have needed a headlamp in a lot of areas Post race
Warm down: Treated blisters on left foot, collected gear went to hotel and started thinking about 2014 What limited your ability to perform faster: Flawed race strategy Event comments: I'll be Back... Last updated: 2013-10-31 12:00 AM
