Pre-race routine:

Finally qualified for a series championship race. Last year I had to sweat out two good but not great performances in the first two races of 2013 (Knoxville and Quassy Oly) but I held on and qualified 17th. Never felt so good when I saw those final results locking me into the first champion event ever. So I worked hard all winter only to have my training derailed by a foot and calf injury and the winter from hell. So I had absolutely no idea what to expect, but I was feeling pretty good.

Drove down on Friday getting to the hotel about 6:00pm then headed over to World's Fair Park for the Team Rev3 dinner and the Glow Run. Caught up with some of my teammates then signed up for the race and headed down for the start. I wasn't really planning to race so I started fairly deep in the pack but when the gun went off and after the first quarter mile, something clicked and off I went. I weaved my way forward and the hear the Map My Run App voice proclaim 1 mile, time 6:55 as I moved up to 7th. We hit the turn and I saw were I stood and chased after the 2 in front of me. Had one guy pass my on the way back just as we both caught one of the two in front . 2 miles, time 13:55, last mile 7:00. So now I tried to push it. Didn't seem to make up any ground as we passed the start line and went under the road and wound up to the finish area. We started also catching the 1 mile walkers which made it tough. Hit 3 miles at Time 20:44 last mile 6:49. Then as we hit the railroad tracks and turns and tons of walkers and kids I easied it back and averaged 7:38 the last .16 miles according to my Iphone and hit the line 8th in 22:08. Not a bad run.

Headed back to the hotel and went to bed. Checked in the next morning but missed the practice swim. Watched the Little Rev Adventure race, then headed back to the hotel. Went to the althletes dinner for the AG champs and listened to the pros doing some Q&A then went to bed early since I had a long drive after the race. Wake up call at 4:45am. Drank my Beet juice and ate a smores powerbar and had a performance energy blend and checked out and drove to the parking lot between the park and the transition area.
Event warmup:

Set up transition and got into my wetsuit and then walked the 3/4 mile to the starting line and Calhoun's. Hit the potty potties at the restraint, and then zipped up. Watched the pros go and then our wave was first all male championship wave. Had a few minutes to swim and warm up, but not much other than get over the shock of cold water to the face.
Swim
  • 36m 59s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 45s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started to the outside and in the back since everyone qualified to be here and were fast just decided to stay out of the way. Ended up being a good strategy and I stayed clean and contact free despite crossing over to the inside and then hugging the buoys the rest of the way. Water seemed colder than 65 but I found a decent rhythm and got warm and held my own. Counted down the bridges on the way in and then rolled my way onto the dock and minor calf cramp.
What would you do differently?:

Was the full Half Rev swim course vice the 1 mile originally advertised since didn't want to confuse the folks doing the Half Rev. Could have swam harder early but overall it was a good steady swim and 6th in my AG was a pleasant surprise
Transition 1
  • 06m 23s
Comments:

Long run up to the top of the dock and across the street to transition but it was shorter than last year. Totally got my butt handed to my by my socks. Sole socks are awesome and but with wet feet they are impossible to put on. took forever, then sunscreened and off I went.
What would you do differently?:

Don't expect a fast transition with those socks. 6th to 10th in my AG and 68th to 90th Overall.

Comments:

Got going and was a bit chilly until I was completely dry. The first hill goin up the steep onramp was a bear but I was in the right gear early enough but had to get out of the saddle. From there I rode well, taking it conservative through town and then starting to work harder out into the countryside. Wasn't flying up through the field like a normal bike but that was to be expected since there was only one wave. Came to the spot of my wreck in 2010 and gave tribute to the spot and had someone pass me as I glided by. Went back after him and got him. Did the hills well. On the way back you merge back into the Olympic course for the last 12 miles or so and finally I had a few people to start passing and to race with. Had several folks going back and forth with me as I started to crank up the pace to the end. Lots of hills and the final hill was really good. Grinded my way up the pothole city part as you came back into the city and finished on the freeway back to Neeland Dr. Good ride.
What would you do differently?:

Not quite knowing how to pace a 40 mile bike and 10 mile run, I probably was a bit too conservative early but I did have a good run so I'm not going to complain. Went from 10th to 6th to 8th in my AG as two people in my AG passed me on the freeway and Neeland as I was spinning up my legs for the run. and 90th to 56th to 55th OA
Transition 2
  • 01m 39s
Comments:

Had a little trouble finding my rack as I went in a bit too soon. Took time to grab a drink off my bike bottle and off I went.
What would you do differently?:

Not bad, could have been quicker. Maintained my position in AG and OA.
Run
  • 1h 20m 48s
  • 9.8 miles
  • 08m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out and my legs felt a bit rough, but they cam to me in the first mile. For the first 2.9 miles we were running with the people on the Olympic so had people to catch and pace with. Had one guy in my AGe pass me ask were the bathroom was stop and then passed me again just after the hill then pull away in the neighborhood. Break from the Olympic at the 2.9 mile point then there were fewer folks but I was still seeing a few and caught several on the mile 4 hill. Have my buddy in my AG catch me and we talked a bit on the downhill before he slowly pulled away. Hit a lull in the middle section until we went down the hill, finally snapping out as I passed the dude in the background of Pam's awesome WIlliamsburg finishers pic heading the other direction. Finally we were back with the Olympic folks and passing people really does help to build momentum and know the finish line was getting closer. Finished strong passing a few of my teammates and then up that final hill to the end. .
What would you do differently?:

Should have eaten more on the bike. Didn't eat my Perfromance Energy Blends, so did Gatorade each aid station, but I had a few lulls in the middle which probably could have been avoided. Went from 8th to 6th to 7th in my AG and held my position OA 55th to 53rd to 55th.
Post race
Warm down:

Got my medal and hat and cold towel and ate some PBJ and hung out in the VIP tent with the pros for that last time. Then packed up and got my results and was very happy to learn I was top 10 in my AG!! Then drove 10 hours home to go to work the next morning.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of consistent training over the winter and injuries which limited my running.

Event comments:

Rev 3 Knoxville had the Pro Series and AG series Championships, the regular Half rev and Olympic Revs, the Revie kids tri on Saturday, an urban adventure race, little rev kids adventure race, and the glow run and movie night under the stars Friday night for the kids on the big screen (over 800 people for the glow run.) Great time and lots of fun for everyone. Great racing and a tough but fair championship level course and a hybrid distance to help crown the series champs. Tim Don absolutely crushed the run going 5 min miles the whole way.and caught Cam Dye who crushed the bike. Awesome racing!
