Pre-race routine:

We drove over to Williamsburg on Friday evening in a thunderstorm--Made me wonder how things would play out with the swim since the debris and pollution that comes down the James River from the west to this point is hefty. Anyway, my husband had gotten us reservations at a charming bed and breakfast that was about a 10 minute walk from the historic part of Williamsburg and maybe a 10-15 minute drive to the race venue.
We had a lovely breakfast on Saturday morning then headed over to the pre swim. The river looked a little choppy from the storms but not as choppy as it was in last years race. I swam the course in the wetsuit then a little more without the wetsuit as the water temp was already 80 degrees so it wasn't going to be wetsuit legal.
From pre swim we hit packet pick up, I got my wrist band and goodie bag. Had Fat Frogs give my bike a once over cause I couldn't figure out why Lola was so noisy. (front derailleur was not quite in gear. Simple click of the gear and BOOM Lola is fine. Mandatory pre race meeting....Headed over to set up T1 then back to our B&B for a shower.
We walked down to the historic park and just wandered around a bit. Saw a portion of a reenactment of the Lafayette speech prior to the final battle with Cornwallis. Fun....walked through a few pricey shops then had a great dinner.
I was in bed around 9 PM and slept well for about 3 hours--then it seemed like I was a human YO-yo getting up to use the bathroom all night. The alarm went off at 4 AM. UGH, too stinking early. Got dressed and grabbed the gear for T2, went to the breakfast room where (as promised) our host had left me a few bagels so I could prepare my breakfast.
We got over to T2, I set up my spot then decided since John was driving over I would just ride with him instead of the bus. We almost hit a deer on our way to the convenience store for coffee....Talk about a HR spike pre race!!
I hit the bathroom at the store and as soon as the lights came on in the bathroom a big old cockroach came out of hiding. YUCK!! There is no bug I detest more than a cockroach! Went out to the car and a big fat bunny was sitting in the grass. Hmmm, this is a wildlife kind of day.
We made it over to the river where I finished most of my coffee, a little more bagel....put my bottles and bike shoes out....set up my sunglasses in my helmet.
Made my way down to the water and we were there before the kayaks were in place so it was just a lot of standing around. Finally about 20 minutes before the race I got in the water and swam a bit. Not much maybe 300 yards total. Mostly just wanted to see how the current felt and all.. Oh, and the fish were jumping again....back to the wildlife after all :)

The river bed is very shallow at this venue. Seriously, we could walk over 300 yards before being deep enough to it not be efficient. I started off swimming, fairly quickly but kept being clobbered and swum over by 2 ladies in particular. I was pretty annoyed cause they clearly didn't even try to site and recognize anyone was there. I stood up (remember how shallow it is?) Cursed them out and basically told them I would push them under if I got swam over again. Then I moved away from them and swam off the pack cause I just am not comfortable in the physical contact of the swim. Made to to the turn buoy cleanly and made my turn. About midway down this leg of the course I flipped to backstroke for about 10 strokes just to catch my breath cause I was feeling dizzy.
Did pretty well along the long side of the rectangle--except that turning to my left to breathe was hard cause I couldn't sneak a spot to site well with the glare from the sun. I was redirected in a bit once--but I don't think I was too far off the course.
Made that final turn in and felt strong most of the way in. Did a short backstroke to release tension in my shoulders then right back to it. I knew getting out of the water that I had FINALLY beaten my Olympic distance swim PR from 2009 by all of 90 seconds. Whatever, I'll take it. If you have ever read my other RR you KNOW how much the swim has dogged me over the years.
What would you do differently?:

Not get clobbered by the 2 team in training ladies?

Probably my best T1 run at this venue. It's a good 1/4-1/2 mile with a hill midway. I had problems with my sunglasses being all fogged up and couldn't see when I first got on my bike.

Almost as soon as I could see from the sunglasses becoming unfogged I realized that my speed sensor was knocked off alignment again. Seriously, I dislike front wheel mounts for those things because they get knocked off alignment so easily!! Okay, ride blind to speed....what's the HR doing to gauge effort? Oh great, HRM decided to not pick up at all. Just time running.....Whatever keep pedaling.
SNAP! Nothing serious, one of the bands holding my aero bottle broke within the first mile. I caught it and held on until I was able to stick it in the bento box safely. Solid by my feel--maybe too easy in retrospect, but almost from the get go my hip flexors and quads are complaining to me so I'm just riding with what I have,
Loop 1 on Jolly Pond--seemed to take freaking FOREVER. Finally see a mile marker and it says mile 10. Seriously? Very soon after this I see another mile marker saying mile 20? HUH? Did I miss the turn to go back onto Jolly Pond? Do I need to DQ myself for cutting the course? Nope.....here's the turn, go back to Jolly Pond. (Like in Monopoly--go to jail, go directly to jail....do not pass go) Yeah, I hate this road with all my being right now.
Loop 2, uneventful.. Tried to be a little more aggressive where I could--but there is a good bit of loose gravel our on the road and it doesn't take much to lose control in that....The freaking hill kicked my butt again. I don't know what makes it so hard, I have ridden worse hills--but that one is just plain UGLY.
Finally, mile 20 for real.....make the turn that will take me closer to T2.
Hit T2 knowing I needed the bathroom and that one was immediately on the run course....
What would you do differently?:

Not sure, legs just weren't playing nicely today.

So I plan using the portapotty just outside T2--but it is occupied. Not waiting, just run....there should be more on the course. My feet felt every bit of hard gravel through the bottom of the shoes. Pure Flow are great shoes--but not meant for trail running that's for darn sure!! Around mile 1.25 there is an aid station with another bathroom. YAY, no wait!! Take care of the bladder and keep going. Get out of the woods, turn out onto the asphalt and slog along. Hit the turn around and head back past the finish area for my second loop. Saw Kristen--it was great to have a spectator high five me and call me by name .....Saw John....keep running. Loop 2 I could tell my legs had decided they were not moving any faster. Now the achilles and calves have joined the hip flexors and quads in a litany of whining. Just keep running.....Hit the turn around, high five the volunteer who thanked me for running. Lady in front of me made a comment that no one thanked HER for running so I thanked her for running today. She was on loop 1 so I think she needed more encouragement. That little hill from the turn around to the last aid station felt like a ginormous mountain by this point. Got to the aid station & the volunteers asked if I wanted a drink or a splash. BOTH. Drank a cup of water and about 5 teenage girls splashed me simultaneously. The last section between that aid station and the finish chute area seemed to take FOREVER. I was happy to see Kristen cause I knew that meant only a few hundred more yards. Hit the finish chute and was glad to be done.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out why my legs are being difficult again....more yoga this week and probably not a whole lot of running to let them rest.

While I am not super happy with the run time, I am looking at it in the context of my other Oly races--I ran the whole thing, only walked in aid stations and I ran with what my legs gave me.

Course: A revision of last years course. This year we get TWO loops on Jolly Pond Road. Oh joy! (NOT) While Jolly Pond has been resurfaced from last year it is a technical ride. Rolling hills, windy and a couple of good hard climbs that beat my tail. There is one section that narrows to a single lane over a bridge and with the way the road winds you really can't be too aggressive-at least I couldn't.
