Overall Rank = 119/167

Age Group Rank = 18/23
Pre-race routine:

Stayed at the River's Edge Inn. Woke up at 4:30. Tossed and turned until 5:15. PB sandwich and SB Energy Drink. Packet pickup and body marking. Set up transition. Had a gel 15 minutes before race start.
Event warmup:

Not much of one. Wandering around and light stretching.
Swim
  • 21m 56s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 55s / 100 meters
Comments:

The current was moving pretty good. The entire first wave ended up right of the mid buoy. When I got in, I immediately realized there was a pretty good chop. Sighting was not great either. It was a tough swim. Also, my first open water in two years and second since 2010. You can't really practice the intangibles.
What would you do differently?:

I was faster two years ago. I blame the current and chop. Ultimately, I need to learn how to swim for real.
Transition 1
  • 03m 20s
Comments:

I tried to tie my shoes on. Didn't go as smoothly as I had hoped. Untying the string wasn't that easy. I WILL get better by Lake Lure. I WILL master this.
What would you do differently?:

Rubber bands instead of string. Practice, practice, practice.
Bike
  • 44m 2s
  • 14 miles
  • 19.08 mile/hr
Comments:

I did improve on 2012. A very solid ride. Nothing remotely resembling the group ride of 2012. It was me setting my own pace.
What would you do differently?:

How much faster could I go on a better bike? This is the first time I am starting to wonder.
Transition 2
  • 02m 6s
Comments:

I think I did fairly well in T2. Socks on my feet went a little slower. I love my tieless laces.
What would you do differently?:

Choosing better socks.
Run
  • 25m 36s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

I had to slow myself down coming out of transition. I set a pace that felt comfortable. I had cramps that limited me from going faster. Couldn't get a feel for my legs at all. I didn't feel fast. Still I obliterated my 5K PR of 28:30.
What would you do differently?:

Can't complain about a PR.
Post race
Warm down:

Wandered around a bit. Saw Santopietro from my class. Hit the shower.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm not a good swimmer. PRs on the bike and the run. Transitions show no practice at all.

Event comments:

I dropped my chip coming out of the water so the times are my watch times for the event. I PR'd on the bike and on foot, so it was a great race for me. But I have this nagging feeling: can I do more? We'll see where I am after Lake Lure.
