Swim Bike Run Northwest
80F / 27C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 07m 15s
Overall Rank = 442/464
Age Group = Athena Masters
Age Group Rank = 8/9
Pre-race routine:

Packed up my truck the night before and went to bed around 9:00 p.m. Got up at 3:30 a.m., two hour drive. Ate on the drive down, three hours before my wave start time.
Event warmup:

Set up my transition area.
Swim
  • 20m 54s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 22s / 100 yards
Comments:

Flawless swim. I had no issues whatsoever.
What would you do differently?:

There was quite a run from the beach to the transition site where we crossed the timing mat. I'm sure this affected my time more than the actual swim, which was really good. I did my best to run as fast as I could, but, well...my running sucks majorly.
Transition 1
  • 03m 6s
Comments:

Pretty good transition. I think improving my running speed would improve my transition time. Second fastest transition in my age group; 332/458 overall.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 47m 4s
  • 11.25 miles
  • 14.34 mile/hr
Comments:

Went off course for about 1/10 mile and had to turn around. Some trouble shifting gears; need to take my bike back to the shop to get front derailleur fine tuned as chain jammed a couple of times (was able to clear by backpedaling a quarter turn); also, unable to shift to smallest gear on back wheel.
What would you do differently?:

Stay on course. Need to improve upper body strength and mountain bike more to improve bike handling ability. Had to slow down too much going around sharp corners. Went outside the cones in a couple places because the turn radius was too sharp for me.
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

Fastest transition in my division! 81/458 overall! Woohoo!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, except learn to run faster.
Run
  • 55m 2s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 17m 45s  min/mile
Comments:

My running sucks.
What would you do differently?:

Everything. Learn now to run. I tried my best.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed some food and beverages from the snack tent and sat in the grass to watch the awards ceremony.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My running is my biggest limitation. It affected not only my swim time, but also my transition times (which were really good!), as well as my run time, of course. Also need to work on my bike handling ability by building upper body strength through strength training and mountain biking.

Event comments:

Very well organized and lots of volunteers!
