Swim
Comments: The swim was pretty well organized for the most part and they kept on time. However, people clearly did not swim that pace that they thought that they would and that lead to several people having be passed. I passed two people in the pool portion. I think I was pretty close to my seeded pace but the walking portion of the swim distorted my timing so it is hard to say. What would you do differently?: I think that I could have gone faster but due to seeded nature of the swim at time you just had to bear with however fast the people in front of you were swimming. All things considered I was pretty satisfied with the swim. And with the swim being as short as it was it didn't make that big of a difference in anycase. Transition 1
Comments: T1 took much longer than it should have. Being a no-wetsuit sort of race I should have been able to clear out of T1 quicker. However, I had difficulty in getting my socks on over my wet feet and fumbled with my bike gloves. What would you do differently?: Try rolling the socks to make them easier to get on over my wet feet. I should also work on putting my gloves on while I am riding. That fumbling in T1 is definitely costing me time that does not need to be lost. Bike
Comments: I was pretty happy with the ride. I tried to maintain a higher cadence about 85-95 for most of the event. I think that I was able to do that. That last 2 short steep hills in the city went very well when I came out of the seat to attack them. For most of the other hills I maintained a seated position and it didn't seem to be going quite as well but with out a power meter it is hard to say for sure. What would you do differently?: About the only thing I would have done would have been to attack the hill prior to the bridge on the way back. However, over all I was pretty happy with the ride. Transition 2
Comments: This could have gone faster but I also used the T2 as a chance to catch my breath after a pretty solid effort on the bike. What would you do differently?: I could have gone faster if I ran in an out of T2. However, I made a conscience decision to slow it down and T2 and regroup a little bit. Run
Comments: In the end I averaged 8 minute miles which I am pretty happy with. The last hill was pretty intense but I am very happy with the way I attacked it all the way to the top. The finishing kick was pretty strong as well and feel like I gave it all that I really had. What would you do differently?: Probably could have gone a little faster in the middle section of the course. I felt like I picked up the pace on the way back in prior to the hill. The Garmin said I did pick it up a bit but probably could have held it a better pace. Post race
Warm down: Some light stetching What limited your ability to perform faster: My transitions need some work. Especially with T1 and dealing with my gloves and socks with my wet feet. Event comments: I really enjoyed this race. The terrain around Lynchburg really adds to the challenge of the sprint distance. I wish that there could be something done in order to have you swim uninterrupted but with a 6 lane 25m pool and not everyone having good estimates for their swim time it probably could not go much better than it did. Its a fun event, scenic course and friendly people. I would recommend it to anyone looking for an early season sprint and is not two worried about setting a PR on this course. Was able to get to the race with plenty of time to set up. Breakfast was very light pretty much consisting of a couple of shot blocks and washed down by some Gatorade. It worked out ok but I would rather not race on that light of breakfast.
Just some light stretching. Probably could have made use of the "warm up" pool, especially since I had about 1 1/2 hours before my slot in the pool.
