Pre-race routine:

Woke at 4:30. Breakfast of waffle with peanut butter. 2 1/2 scoops of GenUcan for pre-race nutrition and 1 bike bottle with RedBull mixed with water. Drove to race venue, approx. 30 min, Identical conditions to yesterday's race, cool and raining.
Event warmup:

Arrived at race venue dreading getting out into the rain and cold again and dealing with the mud in transition. Put wetsuit on immediately after arriving to stay warm and somewhat dry. Did some light stretching and massage of legs. I raced in the sprint yesterday and they were a little stiff and sore.
Swim
  • 26m 9s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 44s / 100 meters
Comments:

Felt like a good swim. My plan was to stay relaxed, be mindful of my form, stay on course using landmarks. Felt like I had swum pretty straight and rounded bouys without any contact with other athletes.

Transition 1
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

Again, transition was muddy to say the least. Worse than yesterday's race because of more rain and more traffic. Carried bike out of transition so it wouldn't get caked with mud. Took some time just outside of transiton to wash the mud off my shoes in a water puddle.

Bike
  • 1h 08m 32s
  • 24.9 miles
  • 21.80 mile/hr
Comments:

Drank more than yesterday, but still didn't finish a full bottle. Legs felt pretty good, but I didn't want to push it too hard. I knew the cumulative effects of yesterday's race would catch up to me at some point. That being said, only one person passed me on the bike, but he was 13 years younger than me, which gave me a mental boost.
What would you do differently?:

Now that I've had a chance to reflect on it, probably should have taken it a little easier on the bike. See run report section.
Transition 2
  • 01m 5s
Comments:

Carried bike into transition because of the deep mud. Pretty sure we all got credit for a tough mudder too. After racking bike, I ran out of transition with my shoes in my hands so they didn't get caked with mud. Ran through the large water puddle outside of transition to wash my feet off before putting my running shoes on.
Run
  • 46m 1s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 07m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

Definitely and quite noticeably not as much spring in my step as yesterday. I deliberately took the first mile easy and tried to steadily increase my pace as I went. Took a small running bottle of water with me as not to have to take from the aid stations. Cardio felt great, but the legs just didn't have it. Still pushed it as hard as I could to hopefully place in the amateur challenge.
What would you do differently?:

Take it a little easier on the bike I guess. This is the first time I had raced a sprint the day before, so I wasn't sure about pacing.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked backed up the run course and waited for my wife to come by so I could cheer her on.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Racing the sprint the day before. Slow transitions.

Event comments:

Great race, too bad the weather conditions weren't better. Well worth the trip and the money.
