Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 4:45. Ate energy bar and banana on the way to the race. Had to check-in morning of due to bad traffic night before. Picked up Bib.. got marked.. set up transition area.
Event warmup:

Stretched and waded in water.
Swim
  • 00m
  • 2112 yards
  • / 100 yards
Comments:

So water was much warmer then expected. Unfortunately for me. I only made it through a 1/3 of the swim. My shoulder that I have been having issues with just couldn't hold up. Major dissapointment for my first 70.3.
What would you do differently?:

Should of defered to the next year because I knew shoulder was having issues.

Bike

Comments:

Despite my swim fail I decided to continue on. Bike course was VERY HILLY!!! Wow.. they said on the race site it was very challenging and they weren't kidding. That being said it had some beautiful scenery. Overall I was shooting for under 3.30 and just barely made that. For my first 70.3 I was happy. But I definetely need to continue putting in some TITS.
What would you do differently?:

More TITS. Probably need to buy a tri bike. This was my first 70.3 and the competition is definitely much stiffer at this level. I was 1 of 3 road bikes that I saw anyways on the course. Not saying my time would of been dramatically different but it def. would of helped to be able to stay aero more.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 2h 30m 30s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

So I ran a half marathon the week before in 2:14. So over-all I was happy with this time. My calves were so tight the first mile that I almost turned around but after some stretching I pushed through. This course is very tough. I feel like 10 of the 13 miles are uphill. Not to mention you have to pass the finish line twice before you finish. The great part about the run is there were 6 aid stations every loop.. so plenty of fluids/energy gus/oranges and such.
What would you do differently?:

Needed alot more run training. Just had a tough time fitting everything in. I can run a half in 1:45 when I can put the miles in. So I would like to be closer to the 2:00 mark doing a 70.3.

Event comments:

Overall despite being bummed about the swim. I liked this race alot. Great volunteers and well marked course. This was def not an easy first 70.3. The bike and run were both very hilly. Would/will do again so I can actually finish the 70.3 and not 69.5!
