  • Comments: This is a good race by MTS-VTS. I was hoping to break 5:20. I think if I really train well and get a flatter course, I may even have a 5 hour half in me. I need to work on open water swimming and try to figure out how to get faster on the bike.

  • Comments: Great race Overall – PR. I’m happy with my swim and bike. I’m very unhappy with my run – it was below average performance wise, however I’m happy with how I handled the cramps and GI issues. I thought that my day was over during the initial onset of cramps, then I didn’t know what to expect with the GI issues. Going into the race, I thought I should have a very good shot at making the podium. Obviously I cannot control who shows up. I ran my race and even If I had a good run, I feel that the best run I could have thrown down yesterday would have been 1:34 which still would have left me off the podium. After driving the bike course on Friday, I was skeptical of breaking 2:30 – so again I’m happy with the bike. Takeaways – In my opinion one of three things caused me to blow up on the run: 1) over-bike, 2) nutrition off; 3) hydration off. 1) I don’t think I over-biked. As mentioned I felt good the entire ride and no had bad spots – that has never happened. I felt like I could

  • Comments: Overall despite being bummed about the swim. I liked this race alot. Great volunteers and well marked course. This was def not an easy first 70.3. The bike and run were both very hilly. Would/will do again so I can actually finish the 70.3 and not 69.5!

  • Comments: No latrines on the bike but water/gatorade handoffs were good. Plenty of latrines on the run. They had misting sprinklers on the run course but they weren't really needed since it rained in the afternoon. Plenty of bananas and oranges on the run course.

  • Comments: over all a great race, not a PR but only a minute something off and this time no current assisted swim and HILLS! The bike was faster than B2B on those hills, so that has me very happy and my swim time was a great surprise and right on target with my training.

  • Comments: This is my 2nd HIM and my 1st had 150 people so the feel was much different. This was a great race from beginning to end. My only beef is with USAT and getting hit with a penalty. I understand their position but when 4 out of the top 10 are hit with penalties and the course is loop so its a total mixture of abilities on the bike course they didn't deal an even hand. The guy who took 3rd Overall was hit with 3 penalties! Come on. During the first loop I had the motorbikes following me 3times and saw them over 6times but on my 2nd loop only saw they once. RD was pretty pissed when they posted three sheets of penalties and the women next to me who rode the course at 15mph got a drafting penalty! Food wasn't good and I heard the food from 2011 was awesome but the pulled pork sandbo I got on my way home was what I wanted anyway! I can't complain as I crushed my PR by 30mins. Now it's time to kick up the volume on the bike & run and set my sights on Lake Placid.

  • Comments: 2nd Year for me doing this race. I love the area of VA that it's in. Greg and Setup Events do a fantastic job of putting on a great race. So much so, that you don't even really know they are there. They are in the back drop the whole time. But, you can clearly see, they work very hard to make the race run as smooth as it does. Fantastic weather in 2012 and a great day. Highly recommend this event for anyone looking for a tough half ironman to race.

  • Comments: This race would be better if; *the few potholes on course were spay painted with dots leading up and a circle around *the food and the vendor serving were better and polite *one of 4 water stations on run weren't handing out brown tinged water Really, this is my second SetUp event and they are really good. All above are minor and I will be doing more Set Up events Lord and body willing. They do a nice job.

  • Comments: Good job as always by Setup Events. They delayed the start 15 minutes to let the fog burn off and given that it was going to be a sunny day it burned off quickly.

  • Comments: this could have easily been a PR race for me, just by elimating the waste in transitions I could have PR'd and if I pushed a little more on bike/run, I think I had a more in me, but that wasn't for today. Overall, I got out of today what I wanted, IM fitness check and learn from a race day what to tweek in the plan. Main take away is to have a race plan and review it over and over. I did this well last year and it really helped, so I know what the benefit is now.

  • Comments: Beat PR by 50 minutes. Beat goal time (5:14 on 5/14) by almost 7 minutes. Traveled with and shared room with Patrick Pannett. 4:14:00 in zone 3. low hr 96; ave hr 145; high heartrate 174; 5,453 calories The volunteers all had information and were available. The course is extremely well marked -- from the water to mile markers to turns. I didn't see aid stations running out of supplies. Would have liked to see drinks other than water on the bike course. Not a big deal.

  • Comments: This is by far my lowest ranking in any race I have ever done. Well no, I did DNF my first HIM attempt (freaked out in the swim). My HIM PR is 5:39 and I'm typically right around 6 hours so I'm a good hour slow and I'm a long ways from IM fitness. I turn 50 this year. I decided last year that to celebrate the 50th year of my life I would do 3 things? 1. Run my first 100 miler 2. Run another Boston Qualifying marathon 3. Complete another Ironman Goal number 1 was accomplished at the Umstead 100. The problem is that I enjoyed that so much that I'm finding that I don't have a lot of interest in continuing on with goals 2&3. I really want to just do trail running and ultras. The plan currently is to stick with my original plan for 2011 and then let that fitness cary me into a spring 2012 100. I just have to keep telling myself that I'm doing 100 mile training, just taking a different approach to my training this time. I do have to admit that training for and completing a 100 mile
