Swim
Comments: Lots of swells and chop on the course once you cleared the boat harbor. Nice think about this race is the starting waves are small and people spread out nicely so there's very little contact. Water was cool at the start, but just fine with the wet suit. What would you do differently?: No swim training means slow, uncomfortable swim legs. This winter needs to be the time to get the swim whipped into shape! Transition 1
Comments: Forecast looked at before the race was calling for temps is the 40's and 50's. Based on this, I took extra time to dry off and put on extra gear. This has to have been my slowest T1 of all time. Bike
Comments: I've been riding a lot but not running very much at all. Decided to try and limit the bike, riding by HR, with the hope of having a decent run. Goal was to keep my HR in the 130's. Overall this worked fairly well but is frustrating to be out on the course and not feel like you're putting out much effort. It was a windy day, so times were slow relative to the amount of effort expended. All in all, this is a great bike course. What would you do differently?: Weather forecast was way off and I was overdressed. Stopped at the turn-around to pee and removed the vest. Would have been better-off without the vest, gloves, and shoe covers. Transition 2
Run
Comments: I had been running some, but not putting in much volume, so my goal was to bike easy and run well, using HR to pace. This worked well, kept the HR in the 148-152 range which translated to about an 8:30 pace. Temperatures were in the low 70's but with a cooling breeze. What would you do differently?: Good run! Post race
Event comments: Excellent race at a great venue. This race is a great way to end the tri season. This was my third Oil Man, and each year seems better than the last. Last updated: 2014-06-27 12:00 AM
