Swim
Comments: My first time at the 1/2 Ironman distance, and it took "forever" to round the first buoy. There was a lot of slapping, grabbing, but I was able to keep my focus. What would you do differently?: Generally need to work on my swim speed and endurance. For this race my swim went exactly as planned. Transition 1
Comments: I think the bike transition is long due to the swim course exit verses the transition entrance, but overall I did pretty good. It helps not having to put on a shirt (as I wore it under the wetsuit). What would you do differently?: Next time place my gloves inside my helmet, rather than attached to the chinstrap. Bike
Comments: The aid stations were great and plentiful enough, although I didn't have their location memorized so the anticipation to get to them was high during the first lap. I was able to keep to "my" race most of the time, but just had to chase down a few people. The course was really busy for the first lap-and-a-half, until the quarterman racers were done. What would you do differently?: Bring a second water bottle for filling, or get new cages that can hold the water/Gatorade bottles. Also I need to work on my hydration and nutrition plan a little more. I'm close, but still had some issues. Transition 2
Comments: I felt this transition was a lot better than the time indicates. What would you do differently?: I'm looking into Slicklaces, and we'll see how well the work. Run
Comments: The first six miles were at a 9:28 pace. I broke down on the second loop. I think this was due to: 1-poor nutrition, 2-insufficient training, 3-insufficient conditioning, 4-it was really hot. I am sure that the temperature during the run was between 90-92 degrees. What would you do differently?: My pace was about right for the first loop, and I should have been able to improve the pace on the second half. I really needed to hydrate better, and pour more water to keep cool. Also, I should have cut my toenails last week, I ended up with a cut (at mile 12) because one was too long. Post race
Warm down: Ice bath, water and short PT session. What limited your ability to perform faster: Improper conditioning, training and higher heat than I expected. Event comments: I may have hit the wall during the run, but I had a great race. This was my first 70.3 it kicked me, and I feel like I kicked it right back. I'm going to work on my swimming speed, and my running capacity. I'm not sure if this length fits in well with my schedule, or if I should stick with the Olympic and Sprint distance races.
