Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30 and drove to race site. At 2 breakfast sandwiches en route. Easily picked up packet and set up transition. Then, waited for race start. The start was delayed for 15 minutes due to fog.
Event warmup:

Swam a couple hundred meters in the lake. After the delay, went back in the water to warm up a bit more.
Swim
  • 31m 1s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 04s / 100 meters
Comments:

The swim felt very long and slow. I didn't get into a groove until the last third. There were a lot of fast swimmers in the race.
What would you do differently?:

Continue to practice swimming and keep my head down.
Transition 1
  • 01m 40s
Comments:

I finally got a bit faster in T1. It wasn't far from the lake, but it was a long run up a grassy hill with the bike to the mount line. That was sure to spike the heart rate at the start of the bike. The timing mat was in the middle of this run, so it's hard to know how much was timed to the transition and how much to the bike.
Bike
  • 1h 15m 35s
  • 24 miles
  • 19.05 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike course was fairly challenging with the hills and corners. I never really felt good on the course, but had a pretty good ride. My speed was slow, but the course necessitated this.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe push a little harder.
Transition 2
  • 01m 46s
Comments:

T2 shouldn't take longer than T1. I need to figure out how to get my socks on faster. I had to run the bike down the grass hill to T2, quite a distance. Then, it was uphill out of T2 for the start of the run.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out how to get socks on faster.
Run
  • 48m 2s
  • 10 kms
  • 04m 48s  min/km
Comments:

I need to run more hills. Coming out of transition, it took a while to feel good. This was due to the uphill into T2 and the uphill coming out of it to start the run. I felt good on the flats of the run, but the uphills were tough. Overall, it was a good run.
What would you do differently?:

Practice running more hills.
Post race
Warm down:

Got pizza and drinks, hung out with family to watch other finishers, including Emily from RTC who finished 3rd in her AG.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I could have pushed a bit more. It was a big change to adjust from the 2 halves I did most recently to the Olympic distance again. The course was more challenging than I expected.

Event comments:

Setup generally puts on a good race. I plan to do more of theirs in the coming years. I enjoyed the challenge of the course, which provided a pleasant change to some of the other races. I also enjoy racing different courses. I would recommend this race to others.

Course: The course was a big loop around the lake. It was described as "technical". The hills and curves kept coming, with a couple of spots where you could get some speed. These led immediately to another uphill. None of the hills were overly steep, but they kept coming. There were two narrow bridges that were potholed and required a big slow down. You had to constantly have your hands on the gears.
