Swim
Comments: Calling it a disaster might not be accurate... but it's not too terribly far off. As the horn sounds I somehow get my first stroke between a guy in front of me's legs. His hard scissor kick clips my arm and for a moment I think he's broken my arm. I keep on and take a good pummeling for my pause. I figure I can continue so I find the next pair of feet and follow him pretty much the entire way. What would you do differently?: Erase this swim from my memory. Got to get a wetsuit that actually fits me... and I have to learn how to swim. Transition 1
Comments: Huge run to t1. Once in the corral I made my way to my spot and managed to get my suit off and out the gate with as much speed as I could muster. Lots of dodging others made it tricky. The mount line was obviously a mess. What would you do differently?: Hurry it up. Not a great t1. Bike
Comments: Humbling to be that far back in my AG with my bike split. That said, I had a good bike up until the end. Once back on the bridge heading back to transition I figured I had a really good shot at breaking 1hour if I pushed it back in... I'd be fine, right? Insult to injury, besides tanking my run I was still off by under a minute :/ IF was 1.004. Avg. Watts - 217 What would you do differently?: Got what I deserved. I've never been good at pacing olympic bike efforts... something I have to improve. I also have to keep the whole race in my head... not just the bike. Transition 2
Comments: Flying dismount goes well... but I immediately realize I have overdid the bike as my legs feel pretty beat. I start running with the bike but my hand slips off the saddle and down goes the cervelo! I fumble to pick it back up and just hope that it isn't hurt (thankfully wasn't, only my shoe took a beating) back to the rack and grab my gear. Out the gates to run. What would you do differently?: Primarily not dropping my bike would be best. Run
Comments: No excuses, my run was not good. I've yet to run anywhere near my potential (especially in an olympic) this year. Sadly I'm just a slow learner. What would you do differently?: Trust my race plan from the beginning. Post race
Warm down: Got some water and my medal... found Jenny and the family and finally found somewhere to get some real food (sort of... Milwaukee is a crappy downtown area for eating) then re-checked the bike in for the Sprint and went back to the hotel to take it easy. What limited your ability to perform faster: Being a big dummy is the primary one. Event comments: Actually a lot smaller setup / activities than I had expected. Not that small is terrible or anything, just not what I expected. Lots of volunteers and a nice area (road construction aside) to race around. Last updated: 2014-08-12 12:00 AM

Jenny, mom and myself loaded into the car on Thursday morning (followed by my grandparents! Full support group for Nats!) and made the 600 mile drive to Milwaukee uneventfully. I got my chips / bands Thursday afternoon and spent most of Friday just taking it easy and getting the bike checked into transition. Saturday I was up early and in transition to get everything set up. I had planned to go back to the hotel after transition closed (as my wave didn't start until 9:30) but decided against it when the garage I parked in was on a road that was closed and I wouldn't be able to get back in. So we sat under a shade tree and watched the other competitors start.
I tried to get a run in but the sheer volume of people in the area made it tough to do much. Once my wave was ready to get in the water I got a fairly good / long swim warmup in. I wasn't excited about using my DeSoto suit (which doesn't fit terribly well) but it was cold enough I decided it was the best choice I had.
