Total Time = 1h 01m 42s
Overall Rank = 2/156
Age Group = 45 - 49
Age Group Rank = 1/12
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:00 am and got dressed. On the way to the event (45 min drive) I ate a banana and a Perfect Foods Bar while sipping on coffee and water.
Event warmup:

A few laps around the parking lot with some strides/accelerations mixed in.
Swim
  • 06m 21s
  • 400 meters
  • 01m 35s / 100 meters
Comments:

The swim was last.

Although diving in was permitted, I chose not to based on the last time I tried (goggles came off) and my lack of any practice since then. So, I eased in and began my swim. No cramps on entry (that's always nice) and I was able to hold form (no crossover, something I have been working hard to correct in training) the entire 400 m. I felt strong, so I decided to flip turn at the walls - I was able to do so at every wall except one wall where I made a pass at the wall and did not feel that a flip turn was safe.

On the last 50 m, me and the guy who placed third had a nice side-by-side sprint finish. I was able to edge him out slightly, and had the inside position for the swim exit - leaving him only 4 seconds behind me at the finish. It was a fun way to end the race!
What would you do differently?:

I'd like to dive in at the swim start next time... need to practice.
Transition 1
  • 01m 10s
Comments:

T1 was a run to bike transition.

I ran to my bike from the run (wish it could have been faster - but, was gassed from the run) while removing my race belt, I stripped my running shoes off, put on my helmet, grabbed my bike, and ran to the mount line. I missed landing on my bike shoe for the mount and I fussed with it longer than I would have liked. But, it really didn't cost me a ton of time.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Getting in my shoes was less than ideal - but, things like that happen on occasion.
Bike
  • 31m 23s
  • 20 kms
  • 38.24 km/hr
Comments:

I love this bike course - just enough features (hills, traffic circles, and turns) to keep it interesting. I stayed on the aerobars as much as possible - coming out of them only for the traffic circles (in the down hill direction), the 90 deg turns, and the turn around.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.

Transition 2
  • 01m 38s
Comments:

T2 was a bike to swim transition.

I got on top of my bike shoes before entering the parking lot. I had a good dismount at the line and removed my helmet while I ran my bike to my rack. At my rack I removed my sun glasses and grabbed my goggles then and ran the LONG route to the pool.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 21m 10s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 14s  min/km
Comments:

I was hoping (again) for a sub 21 minutes here... but, still unable to get it. The slight uphill for the second half of the course just seems to zap me...
What would you do differently?:

I'm not sure.... faster running just seems to elude me no matter how I train.
Post race
Warm down:

Caught my breath then ate a banana and drank some water. After that, I went to find my friend's son so I could see him finish his race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

As usual, the run.... uggh!

Event comments:

A well organized race at a great facility with tons of volunteers. I would have loved for the "play pool" to be running so that I cold hit the water slide and the whirlpool after the race... :-)
