Swim
Comments: I felt good on the swim but could not find any feet to stay on for long periods of time. I kept getting off course and felt like my siting was not good. I really think that the bouys were not straight and acutually angled away from the shore, so it was weird. Not much bumping, only a few knocks around the course. I did get a nice kick in the stomach by a breast stroker. What would you do differently?: I think my swimming volume was down too much in the last couple weeks. I need to be comfortable in going hard. I felt like I was going to go out to hard. I think I could have gone harder here. I thought I had a good swim but was under my time goal here by 2 minutes. Transition 1
Comments: Good T1. I went through here quickly and was out in no time. I had trouble getting up to speed with my feet on top of the shoes and getting into them, but not horrible. I was 4th fastest in T1 in my age group. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Bike
Comments: Brought my carb drink and some gels and a cliff bar + water. Started out pretty easy and saw Adam right out of Transition. Man did he swim fast. Gave him a quick get out of the way, (jokingly) and kept my pace. Had a 30 year old girl who I traded places with the whole ride. She eventually beat me but I caught her on the run. Pushed hard on the down hill sections and stayed with some guys that were clearly drafting. I however kept my 3 bike lengths from them. They finally broke up and we played pass each other for a while. I was able to pee on the bike 3 times without stopping and made sure no one was behind me. I wanted to average 22.4 and managed 22.8. So this was just what I wanted to do. What would you do differently?: Push harder on the second half. I think I could have handled 23 MPH on this race. My legs never felt bad. I had some guys blow by me. Transition 2
Comments: Fastest T2 in my age group. Felt smooth. Left T2 and my wife tells me Steve Pye was about 4 minutes ahead. I thought. I will have to really work to catch him. What would you do differently?: Nothing! Run
Comments: Left T2 and saw Richard (verve500) he had a flat and dnf'd. bummer. Started easy and talked with a friend Micheal on the first mile. I wanted to run the first 3 miles at about 8-8:30 pace. Got to the first mile in 7:11. It felt real easy so I decided to keep it there. Took it real easy with quick cadence on the uphills. 2nd mile 7:26, 3rd mile 7:27, 4th mile 7:08, 5th mile 7:19, 6th mile 7:34. My mile splits got messed up after that because they didn't have the next 7 miles marked. Got a few more splits later and was still running around 7:30 pace. So I was encouraged. Saw Stacie and ran with her for a bit. Worked steady on the middle 6 and pushed much harder on the last 5k. Ended up beating goal time here by 7 minutes. Drank gatorade and water at each station and dumped water on my head at everyone to stay cool. I never felt very hot. Nice running day weather. Ate some hammer gel that I carried went I felt I needed it. At mile 9 I felt a little dizzy so I ate 2 e-caps and that did the trick. No cramping issues, it was solid effort. I never caught Steve. He beat me by 4 minutes. What would you do differently?: Go a bit harder at the beginning and keep a better overall pace. Post race
Warm down: Walked around and found my wife and drank some water and gatorade. My hamstrings tightened up right as I finished so I stretched them out. Went to the volunteer tent and picked up a shirt they gave to all series finishers. Then drank some beer for pain killer and ate some pizza and salad. Found Ryan,Matt, Stacie, Erik and Adam. They all finished strong. Way to go all. Talked to Julia and Brett and others and talked about the long day. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of swim volume, knowing how hard to go so I don't blow up. Event comments: Wow! What a great race! Barry gave away great prizes and I ended up bringing home a Visor, for doing the race, an extra shirt from the series, a case on gatorade endurance, they were giving them away. And a bow of harvest power bars. Great event and well run! Way to go Barry and Jodie. Last updated: 2006-07-31 12:00 AM

Woke up at 3:15. I wanted to leave by 4. I got there at 4:35. Got a great parking spot up close and was first in line at Transition. My wife also volunteered as Transition security. She was like a bouncer not letting anyone in without a number. At a decent breakfast of protein shake, 2 oatmeal packets, coffee, water. Found a great TZ spot but was way at the end, so it was a long run with the bike out of T1.
Short run and a quick swim to acclimate to the water. It was actually a bit chilly in the morning.
