Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 169/384
Pre-race routine:

Relaxed, had a PB&J, banana and coffee. 1 Salt Stick about 30 minutes before the swim.
Swim
  • 1h 30m
  • 4224 yards
  • 02m 08s / 100 yards
Comments:

Got kicked in the first 100 yards, lost goggles and had to stop to regroup and put them back on. Took a while to get into a rhythm after that. The altitude was more of an impact than expected. Average for the distance in training was closer to 1:15 so I was slow.

One Salt Stick and 1 gel about every hour, anoth4er PB&J at mid point in the race.
Transition 1
  • 14m 33s
Comments:

Took the time to eat and change into full cycling shorts, Overall a good decision even though it made transition slow.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 6h 20m 46s
  • 112 miles
  • 17.65 mile/hr
Comments:

Overall a good ride, the hills were just consistently up and down, very few long hills but almost no flat on the course. Based on Garmin there was about 4700 feet of climbing. Roads were mostly good but they were typical rural roads so not smooth.
What would you do differently?:

Pushed a little too hard to maintain pace and it hurt the run. Be more consistent.
Transition 2
  • 11m 29s
Comments:

The transition was almost a 1/2 mile long and the pavement was blistering hot. Took the time to change and cool down some before heading out on the run.

Run
  • 5h 37m 9s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 12m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Need to be better trained. Altitude was more significant than expected.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

For my first Ironman it was as good as could be expected. Elevation was more of an impact than expected. Suffered from under training.
Felt really good post race. Walked back too house and relaxed. Woke up the next day and walked about 4 miles to stretch out and just move the legs. Took it easy but overall felt good.

Event comments:

I think that most of the issues were related to this being the inaugural race. Hopefully in 2015 they fix these. Parking and pre-race fees were ridiculous, it cost over $100.00 to do training swims etc. The race blamed the reservoir but in truth it was WTC just raping the athletes. all athletes shoudl swim and park free the week of the race. One major issue was that the town was not prepared for all the athletes and fans. WTC gave food tickets to select restaurants instead of having a dinner. Restaurants were overwhelmed and could not keep up with need so many athletes couldn't use food tickets.

Performance:
Went out at 9:00 minute pace as planned. Had to slow way down or risk DNF. Walked most of the last 8 miles.
Course: Lots of hills, nothing significant, just constantly up and down. Course was beautiful, lots of spectators and support. At least 50% was in the shade which was good because it was hot.
