Pre-race routine:

Wake: 4:00 a.m.
Food: Bagel, peanut butter, oatmeal.
Depart: 5:00 a.m.
Arrive: 6:30 a.m.
Setup: 6:30-7:00 a.m.
Race: 7:30 a.m.
Event warmup:

Light stretching.
Swim
  • 07m 31s
  • 300 meters
  • 02m 31s / 100 meters
Comments:

Did better on this swim compared to last race. I still had to back stroke twice (compared to 3 last time), but each time was also shorter. Breathing and form both were improved.
What would you do differently?:

Think I did as well as I could do given my current fitness level. Just need to continue to work on all the fundamentals moving forward.
Transition 1
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

Seems transitions are a strong point for me. Despite the fact that I still don't pre-clip my shoes to my bike, I have very fast transition times compared to everyone else.
What would you do differently?:

Need to practice flying mounts more. I gave this a try on this race, but was wobbly and almost ate it.
Bike
  • 41m 38s
  • 13 miles
  • 18.73 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike felt good, but I started feeling a little more fatigued than expected during the last few miles. Would find out what the problem was on the run.
What would you do differently?:

My performance on the bike was fine. Probably wouldn't change anything.
Transition 2
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

Another great transition.
What would you do differently?:

Just need to learn to do a flying dismount.
Run
  • 31m 20s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

I puked twice on this run at roughly the halfway point. I drank Gatorade before the race, which is a little too sweet for my stomach. I also drank too much of it (about 40 ounces) and too soon (about an hour) before the race. I could feel it sloshing around in my stomach, along with the water I took in on the bike, as I started the run. I don't know what I was thinking taking on so many fluids. Technically, I could probably run this race without taking on any hydration if I wanted to.
What would you do differently?:

I was hydrated just fine in the days leading up to this race and didn't need to over do it. Rookie mistake I guess. Had already known that Gatorade doesn't sit well with me and had switched to Powerade Zero, but didn't have any at the house race morning and had to grab some Gatorade that just happened to be in the fridge. Next time, will drink water before I am forced to drink Gatorade. Better option would have been to plan better and make sure I had my Powerade on hand.
Post race
Warm down:

Just walked around the recovery area and got some bananas in me. Was feeling much worse than at my last tri due to the puking on the run.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hydration plan as previously noted.

Event comments:

This, like my last tri, would be a perfect first-timers triathlon. For pretty much all the same reasons. Sprint distance, pool swim, fairly easy course, but just challenging enough to make it interesting. Organization was good and post meal food was excellent. Swim was indoor at a very nice aquatics center. Transition to bike was a little sketchy as you had to exit the aquatics center and go down some fairly steep concrete steps. I made it fine, but kept picturing somebody eating it on those steps. Transition area was a pretty crowded and cramped. Was in a huge empty parking lot so it seemed they could have given us more room. Not a big deal though. Bike course was good. Slightly hilly and largely in an unincorporated area with fairly decent concrete roads. There were a few larger cracks and small potholes to look out for, but nothing to be too concerned about as long as you were paying attention. For the most part, it was a fast bike course. The run course was a bit odd in that there were like 3 out and back type turnarounds. Seems they could have come up with a better course for the run, but I know the city may have limited them. Was a fairly flat run course and was able to follow it o.k. though so no big deal. Again, overall a wonderful race and I will likely do it again.
