Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 15/20
Pre-race routine:

had breakfast, got dressed put on sun screen.

packed up the car for the race and the beach with the family after the race.

set up transition. talked with wife and son.
Event warmup:

did about a half mile run
swam about 300 yards.

debated on putting the wetsuit on. it was hot, felt the added minutes in t1 wouldn't be lower than lost swim time without wetsuit.
Swim
  • 08m 28s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

had a good swim. i felt slow, start was 3 athletes every 10 seconds. so i only started with two other guys.

at start guy to my right didn't get a good start. so it was me and the guy on my right. at about the first buoy, i noticed a lot more people in the water. i thought it was folks catching up to me. it wasn't until a bit later i realized it was me catching up to them.

i had some slight out of breathe feelings and backed off a bit.

tried drafting but it would cause me to lose rythym and i'd get a bit off course.

forgot about drafting and just swam. about half way through my goggles started taking on water. stopped, dumped the water and stuck them to my face. water issue cleared out.
What would you do differently?:

nothing. keep swimming hard in training. focusing on getting more efficient over the winter.

very happy with this swim without a wetsuit. got back in the water in June. so not bad at all for only two months of solid swim training.

goal for this segment was 8:00. so being over only 28 seconds is not too shabby.
Transition 1
  • 02m 24s
Comments:

long run to my bike. had to basically run around transtiion to my bike.

my foot got stuck on my shoe. had to sit down and make sure it was on. maybe i wait and fix it on the bike next time?

What would you do differently?:

try and fix shoe issues on the bike instead of in T1.

other than that. not sure why i was slow.
Bike
  • 36m 53s
  • 12 miles
  • 19.52 mile/hr
Comments:

got up to speed pretty quickly. about 2 miles in, my neck started killing me.

not sure if it's the bike or swimming.

i pushed pretty hard. but i never felt like it was too hard. i was aiming for comfortably hard, but i don't think i did that either.

at one point i noticed i was at 17 mph. i ramped up and pushed.

i did good on the 'hills' on this course. never got out of the big ring.
What would you do differently?:

i think it's either the way i swim or the bike. my neck was killing me towards the end, i had to sit up as i couldn't take it. i think this slowed me down some.

need to get fit again. i feel i'm way too low.

also need to do a couple of swim/bike bricks. it could be me swimming heads up that is killing my neck before i get on the bike. i don't normally notice it like this in training rides. but i don't swim before hand.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

i know i can do this faster. my run stuff got buried between my bike and the bike next to me. had to be careful not to knock either bike over. i also grabbed and missed my hat and run belt.

put shoes on, grabbed my garmin and water bottle. put race belt and hat on while running.
What would you do differently?:

make sure run stuff placement is a bit more accessible.
Run
  • 26m 56s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

had a good run. i felt the same as the bike. i ran well for the first mile and a half. very hot out. couldn't push a faster pace for the last mile and a half. dumped water on myself every aid station.

i watered down my skratch labs drink accidentally, so it wasn't as strong.sipped that about every half mile or so.

best part of the race was crossing the fnish line with myles. he loves doing it and i love the feeling i get with him next to me.
What would you do differently?:

not much i can do about the heat. i probably could have pushed harder. just didn't have it.
Post race
Warm down:

got myles to his mom so i could go sit and drink water and sit in the ice bath.

ate some bananas.

didn't run or anything just tried to get cool.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

bike. i had altered my aero position and thought it would help. my neck was killing me. so i need to get re fit for my bike, as well as do a few swim/bike bricks and see if it is my head postion in the water.

Event comments:

good race. it started about 10 minutes late due to cars still parked on the bike route. so for saftey they delayed the start.

would like some more shade in fort tabor, it can get hot on the run.
