Age Group Rank = 3/3
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 2:45am. Cup of coffee, slice of bread with white cheese and honey. After 4 hours of driving, I arrived at Muncie. No problems with parking close to the race course and picking up the packet.
Event warmup:

Light jogging and stretching then swim warm up in the pool. I am glad doing this, because the water was colder than expected.
Swim
  • 07m 39s
  • 300 yards
  • 02m 33s / 100 yards
Comments:

The pacing official did a very good job watching swimmers at the pool and letting the next contestant go. Also people positioned themselves accurately with their expected 100y swim pace. I did not collide with anybody. Wearing the heart rate monitor rate belt slowed me down. I adjusted it during warm up, but it slipped a few times.
What would you do differently?:

Put on the heart rate belt in T1.
Transition 1
  • 02m 16s
Comments:

I improved transitioning from swim to bike comparing to last year. I did not change shorts, dried my head during run from the pool to transition area, and left biking gloves in the bag.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 29m 45s
  • 9.6 miles
  • 19.36 mile/hr
Comments:

I am very satisfied with the bike ride. I pushed hard on flats and hills, took advantage of down hills, monitored heart rate closely, and hydrated on the last lap. There were many first timers riding in the middle or left side, so I had to be cautious passing them.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 00m 34s
Comments:

Very good and fast transition.
What would you do differently?:

Fasten the belt with race number on the run from transition.
Run
  • 25m 33s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

Very good run. One of the fastest of mine despite many turns on the way and one short very steep slope. I was hoping to compete for a winning spot. After the run, I found that the age group winner completed the course in approximately 20 minutes. It is amazing for the guy in his sixties to keep pace below 7 minutes per mile.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Forgot to stretch and cool down jog. Just walked around waiting for results.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I did my best in this first of the season race. My average heart rate was at the high end and maybe should be a little bit lower, but it was a sprint distance. I could have a better result in the swimming pool if not wearing loose heart rate belt.

Event comments:

Good race to open the season. The weather was awesome: 77F, sunny, and little wind. Problems with timing system and posting results have delayed awards ceremony. Many contestants including age group winners left early. This small event could attract more contestants if better organized and advertised. There are very few races at this time of a year in the Midwest and in Indiana the weather usually cooperates.
