Pre-race routine:

Woke up and had a power gel and water. Stayed at the host hotel, so woke up early to transition. Walked back to hotel room with my sherpas and hung out for a bit.
Event warmup:

Did some stretching before the swim. Goals: 1. Have fun 2. Finish the race. 3. Sub-6 (40min swim, 3hr bike, 2hr run) 4. PR. Let's see how this goes.
Swim
  • 37m 28s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

Great swim. Sub 40 min was what i was hoping for and I got it. Except for wind and getting stung by jellyfish, I was very happy with my swim time.
Transition 1
  • 03m 39s
Comments:

Looking for sub-5 min transition
Bike
  • 3h 03m 11s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.34 mile/hr
Comments:

The first 28 miles out I was flying. Feeling good, lost a bottle in the first 5 miles, oh well. Then at the turn around the head wind took over and I dropped to 13-14 mph. It started to get tough and I tried to grind it out. It was either slow down or stay on my goal for a 3 hr bike. Made it back to transition and almost made that goal, but I knew I paid the price. Once I stepped into transition my legs felt like jello. I knew it was going to be a tough run.
Transition 2
  • 04m 5s
Run
  • 2h 53m 51s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 13m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

Paid for a good bike time on the run. My legs were jello and i couldn't get my legs to turn over. The first three miles my HR was good but I couldn't move any faster. I ended up doing a walk run combo, but without shade and the miami heat I was cooking. The bridge worked me as well. I tried to focus and I kept thinking positive but it def was hard. As I went into the final chute I was happy that it was over and thankful I was able to complete the race. I really thought I was in for that sub-6 day. But I'll put it in the memory bank and hope to better next race out.
What would you do differently?:

Pace slower and sacrifice on the bike so I wouldn't have to walk the run. Train more off the bike. Train in the middle of the day in the hot heat so my body can acclimate.
Post race
Warm down:

Relaxed and tried to eat post race pizza to get some carbs in. My go to treat after a race is a Starbucks Caramel Frappacino and that helped me cool down. We went out later and enjoyed the Miami nightlife and ate at an awesome cuban restaurant.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Paced to hard on the bike. Run was shot from there.

Event comments:

Overall, a great venue and fun race. The heat will def. play and factor as well as the headwind on the bike. I always wanted to do this race and I'm glad I did. I def would recommend this race to everyone. Unfortunately I like to try new ironman70.3 venues so I prob will not choose to do this race again in the future.
