Swim
Comments: Well I'm officially a really really bad swimmer. I can swim a mile in a pool in about 35 minutes so I guessed this would take me about 35-40 minutes since it's not quite a mile. Wrong. I was one of the last ones out of the pool. No joke -- I was No. 224 our of the water. Very embarrassing and very slow. I had to be tapped on the head twice by kayakers who told me I was going the wrong way. Ugh. I was in the second heat and by the first buoy the third heat caught me, by the second buoy the fourth heat caught me and by the finish the fifth and final heat had caught me. What would you do differently?: Train more. Try to look every fifth stroke so as not to get so far off course so many times. Transition 1
Comments: T1 went surprisingly well. I had a ho-hum attitude after seeing my swim time so I was totally relaxed and didn't forget anything. I did, however, forget to put my bike into a low gear after changing the flat so I had to downshift quickly to get up to speed. What would you do differently?: Put bike in lower gear before race. Bike
Comments: I should've given more effort and I would've had a better time. Oh and my sunglasses flew off at about mile 12 so I did a really cool sideways skid-stop and ran back and got them. I didn't lose a ton of time -- maybe a minute or so. What would you do differently?: Ride lots. Not drop my sunglasses. Transition 2
Comments: T2 went pretty well but I had to pee so bad I ran out of T2 straight to the men's room just off to the side. I figured I'd rather lose a minute peeing now than five because my bladder was ready to burst. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: I had to pee so I stopped in the men's room. That took about two or three minutes so I was pretty happy with my effort on the run. I passed a bunch of people so that made me feel better. What would you do differently?: Run faster. Post race
Warm down: Walked around and drank a bottle of water. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of training. It's plain and simple. I haven't been training enough for the past couple of months so I take full responsibility. Event comments: It was my first oly and I told everyone "I just wanna finish." But the fact is I really wanted to do better than 3:08:56. I need to keep my eyes open a bit better on the swim, try harder during the race and for crying out loud get my ass off the couch and train more! Chicago is in 10 days so it's time to put up or shut up. Last updated: 2006-08-16 12:00 AM

Got up and left the hotel at about 6 a.m. Got to the race at about 6:30. I had a flat so a friend and I fixed that. Done with no problems. Then I went to register. "No race-day entries despite the web site saying "Race Day Entries: $75." Fortunately the RD was nice and took my money. Or I would've raised HECK! Then the sign-in volunteers forgot to give me a swim cap and I didn't know we were supposed to have one. So after warming up in the water I noticed people had them but weren't wearing them, so I had to run back to the registration tent and get one. What a great start!
Warmed up in the water, which was actually warmer than the air. Strecthed a bit and had a shot of a Gatorade-water concoction.
