Swim
Comments: My watch actually said 46 mins when I exited water, which was still 4 mins better than my Eagleman time. I took it really easy since I haven't swam much all summer. Took it really easy and enjoyed my time out on the lake. No issues other than I found myself drifting to my left far too often. What would you do differently?: Would like to practice breathing from both sides. Transition 1
Comments: Took it very easy and stayed comfortable as planned. What would you do differently?: Next year I want to get into my bike shoes while on the bike. Bike
Comments: Continued to stay comfortable, go out easy and enjoy the scenery. Just wanted to get out there and enjoy the race rather than push too hard. What would you do differently?: I need to start training with HR monitor and bike computer. To date I have just been winging it - no structure at all. All "junk miles". And I could stand to lose 15 - 20lbs. Transition 2
Comments: Arrived at T2 at 4:02 and felt very good. Much better than I did at Eagleman. Run
Comments: I left T2 at 4:03 and I decided I wanted to break 6 hours, so I would need to run a 9 min mile to have a chance. I was 6:36:00 at Eagleman so I was very excited and happy that I may beat Eagleman by 1/2 hour. I felt great. I ran the first 2 miles at about 8:15 pace which was way too fast. I slowed down. I hit the C&D canal path and into the hot, hot sun. I hit the WALL by mile 4. I was cooking and struggling... soon walking and running a little. The Aid stations seemed too far apart. It was lonely out there in the back with no crowds. I didn't want to eat but I knew I must try some Hammer Gel. I forced one down. I saved 2 Electrolyte tablets for the 2nd half of the run and that seemed to help A LOT. Soon after taking them I ran for 3 straight miles without stopping before hitting another wall again. I got excited at one point because I saw the mile 9 marker and looked at my watch and thought I still had a shot to break 6:15:00. But I ran some more and I saw another mile 9 marker. I was totally confused. Then I followed some runners in front of me who went up a hill to the left which took us off course. It was essentially a long slow hill that still ran parallel to the path we should have been on. People behind me were following me too. One guy went down through the woods to get back on track. I was worried the paths might not merge but they eventually did. I don't think we gained or lost anything. We weren't disqualified because there were no officials anywhere. They would have had to DQ a lot of people anyway. But like I said, it didn't appear we gained or lost anything since the paths ran parallell to each other. I hit the road and last aid station and was running and walking the rest of the way. I made it to the finish and beat my Eagleman time by only 4 minutes. What would you do differently?: Need to start training with HR monitor. I need a better nutrition plan. Gotta figure out why I felt so good at the start of the run and went downhill so fast. Post race
Warm down: Orange, hoagie, water What limited your ability to perform faster: poor training techniques. gotta lose weight. Event comments: I loved the swim and bike. Thought it was very nice. But the run was terrible because of the terrain and water/gatorade stations were too far apart for a hot day. water/gatorade on run was often warm (for back of the pack racer like me). Would like to have also seen some Cola out there. I can't believe I have to do a full Ironman in 10 months. I was completely tired after this race. I've decided I definitely need a coach for Ironman.
