Swim
Comments: We spent out 5 minutes at the edge of the bay with Sally Edwards and everything seemed alright. The water was cold, but I didn't seem to notice. I went to the back of the group and positioned myself away from the faster swimmers, so I thought everything was fine. Then our wave started and I fell apart. I tried to breathe, but the water was so cold, I couldn't. I started doing the sidestroke, when a Swim Angel, I think her name was Karen, came along and asked if I was alright. I hung onto her noodle for at least 5 minutes, waited for the next wave to pass, and then started. About 10 minutes after my wave start, I could breathe, and went on alone. I took the scenic route to make sure I stayed out of the way of faster swimmers. What would you do differently?: Next time, I'll give up my heated pools and 90 degree Chesapeake days and practice in cold water. I also need to improve my stroke and speed. Transition 1
Comments: After my disastrous swim, it took some time to regain my senses.I walked slowly to my bike and took a moment to drink some water and eat a gel. After that I had no problem putting on my helmet, sunglasses, and riding shoes. I did forget to take my gloves out of my saddle bag, but I didn't notice until mile 2. What would you do differently?: I'd remember to lay out my riding gloves. Bike
Comments: The bike was better than expect. I made up alittle time for the swim. It was an easy out and back course that was slightly windy but good overall. What would you do differently?: Remember my gloves. Transition 2
Comments: After racking my bike and talking off my cycling shoes, I stopped to get a gel and some water. Then, I slipped into my running shoes and was off. Run
Comments: I'm not a runner so I did an extremely slow job the entire distance. I probably could have walked faster, but I promised myself that I wouldn't. What would you do differently?: Start training earlier and more often for the run. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: Inexperience and training. Before I started training for this event in April, I couldn't swim or walk three miles. My times for the bike and the run were faster than in training, so I'll get faster in time. Event comments: This was a great event for a newbie. Everyone was so supportive and even cheered for slow, fat triathletes like me. AND THANK GOODNESS FOR THE SWIM ANGELS! I wouldn't have done the event without them. With such a positive experience, I will definitely train for this event next year. Last updated: 2006-08-25 12:00 AM

I woke up around 3:30 am. Had a PB & J and 12oz of Powerade. We hit the road around 4:15 am and arrived at Sandy Hook near 5:00 am. I racked my bike and laid out my gear at 5:30 am, so I spent alot of time talking to my boyfriend and running to the car to get things I had forgotten. Spent some time chatting with my rack neighbors, asking them questions about the race, and drinking more water than I should have.
I didn't really do a warm-up. I guess I was just too nervous. I ran to the port-a-potty a few times. Unfortunately, the last time my tri-suit zipper came off the hinge. The 4th wave of swimmers had just entered the water and I was so afraid I wouldn't fix the zipper in time for my wave. About 7 minutes later, I finally fixed it and went to join my swim wave.
