Pre-race routine:

Woke up @ 520am Went for a short walk to fully wake up. Re-checked transition bag. Had a Cliff Bar, washed it down with Nutrament Sport Shake. Headed out to the event. Got to transition, set everything up. Went through T1 and T2 in my head. Put air in tires, headed down to waterfront to get timing chip. Saw the line for the bathroom, was glad I went at the hotel. Took only a few mins to get timing chip, surprised. Went doen to waters edge. Got head wet put on Super Bright Neon Alien Green Swim Cap, I could be seen from space.
Event warmup:

Not much warm up. Just alot of streching.
Swim
  • 31m 31s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started near the back of the pack. Ran out into the water, then ran some more. It was pretty shallow for a while then eventually dropped off. Kept on running (swimming) into people throught the first leg. But I guess that is how it goes. Slowed me down quite a bit. Decided to swim closer to the bouys, a little less jammed. Rounded first one fine. Swam a bit past second one. Got about 20m off course on final leg toward the beach. Out of water, goggles and cap off. Off to transition.
What would you do differently?:

Start at front of pack in my wave, so I wouldnt have to swim over / around slower ppl in my group. Definately would of saved a min or two. Need to work on my sighting. Could of saved time there too.
Transition 1
  • 04m 41s
Comments:

T1 was a long jog from swim exit. No problem finding bike (There was a Mickey Mouse balloon tied to the rack next to my bike. Thank you someone!!!). Helmet on, shoes on, galsses, and go. Short run out of T1, no problem getting on bike, I love my Speedplay pedals!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing went smooth, probably hustle a bit more next time.
Bike
  • 1h 02m 42s
  • 20 miles
  • 19.14 mile/hr
Comments:

They need to plan the Start of the bike and finish better. Path too congested for bikes going in both directions AND runners. The bike was short too about 20mi. Where were the remaining 5?. It would of been nice to know beforehand. A mile ok, but 5 come on thats 20%. Not cool. Who was the race director Michael Brown? (Cheap shot, I Know. But still, I feel cheated .) Hope the Guy who was Medi Lifted is ok.
What would you do differently?:

Wipe contacts before putting on comp, or better yet, cover it the night before. Make sure race number is SECURELY attached. Figure out why i was so uncomfortable in the saddle.
Transition 2
  • 02m 30s
Comments:

Easy in to trans. Decided to wear socks. Saw a fellow BTer. Said hello. Shoes on hat on. Grabbed Gatorade and im out!!!
What would you do differently?:

maybe get thoes Yanks race laces. saw a few ppl with them. shoe, shoe, pull, pull and go! not bad idea.
Run
  • 55m 26s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

Started slow to get my legs. Then kept a steady pace. I need to pick it up more. I could of done better. Should of stopped and introduced myself to the Japanese girls I passed who were watching the race (Ferris Bueller). It was over before I knew it.
What would you do differently?:

Introduce myself to the Japanese Girls. Pick up the pace.
Post race
Warm down:

Water and short walk. Got a bagel and decided it would be better with cream cheese.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Myself. Since it was my first Tri i didnt want to push too hard. i just wanted to finish.

Event comments:

Since it was my first I have nothing to compare it to. BUT the bike / run transition could of been planed better. And I want a full bike course not 80%

Course: Slow to start, first 400m on pedestrian walkway. Several 90* turns with not much room to spare. Once out on the course got up to speed and settled in, until my bike number started to come unglued. It was catching air, not very aero, so I had to constantly reach down and try to re-attach it, until I finally ripped it off and wrapped it aronud my aerobar grip and held it there. A little uncomfortable in my seat as well. Had to sit further back than normal. Since I took my bike comp off the day before, dew had settled on the contacts and I forgot to wipe them dry, so I had erratic readings. 7mph for a while then 13mph. Coming back in, we had bikers AND runners coming at us in the same lane And it wasn't even a lane just a bike path that we all had to share! Not very good planning. Couldn't pass, had to go slow. Easy dismount, no prob finding my stuff (thanks Mickey balloon ).
