Run
Comments: Had done more training for this than any other marathon before. Thought I would have had a faster time, but I think this is a PR (other than my 4:12 stop-watch timed race in 1996) and took 9min off last year's race. I took in water at every water stop along the way except nothing after mile 21. This was the most Gu I ever consumed (usually 5) but wanted to keep energy up. Felt nauseated when I took them in so nothing more after 21 which was just fine. Forgot to take in salt since it was so cool out. Pulled arm warmers off upper arms and just wore around my wrists around mile 22. The 4:20 pacers passed me around there, I tried to keep up but it felt too fast so I tried to shorten and quicken my pace as much as possible which helped. I was less than a block behind them and since I stopped taking any more water I got closer each water stop as they slowed down. On the 25-mile hill they actually walked, so I passed them at the top of that and just pushed as hard as I could the last 1.2 miles to stay ahead of them. My last mile was a 9:17! 500/1026 total marathoners 176/464 female marathoners 12/49 45-49 female marathoners What would you do differently?: All my training was on Wednesdays and Saturdays (or sunday). I needed to add little runs on the other days. Felt I had a good combo of distance and speed work. Definitely need to do leg weights (squats/lunges etc) in the off season as well. And need to do some hill work (because this course is so flat I only did speed intervals and not hill intervals). Overall pleased with my performance. Post race
Warm down: Crossed finish line and found David just inside the chute exit. Drank a chocolate milk and water, wrapped in mylar. We both rang the PR bell. Kelly was outside the chute (she switched to the half that morning), Dennis was a few mins behind and Dave behind him. Sue had been in Lambeau and she found us too. We went as a group to get brats/beer. I had half a brat and another choc milk. Not up for beer yet. Had to keep walking, legs quite stiff. They all went back to shower as David and I ate, had to hit the portalet, then we walked back, took long showers, then lay down for a bit so I could text everyone. Got packed up and loaded the car, walked over to meet those guys at Stadium view for lunch. Had salad and Badger burger (mushroom/swiss) and a pint of miller lite. What limited your ability to perform faster: Some was fear of blowing up at the end. This was the first year I didn't dip into the 11:00 range and only had 5 miles in the 10:00's. I think 7 Gu's was too much. Wish there had been Coke somewhere. Forgot about salt, but it was so cool that prob didn't matter. No joint pain, just very tired hamstrings. Right glute acted up a bit but felt better if I ran on the right side of the road. Low back sl sore. Did not get diaphragm twinges at all. Event comments: Love this race, we come every year. David did so awesome in his first full here, it will be a great memory. Volunteers are amazing and are everywhere. Post race party is always fun, but it was so cold and windy we just needed to get showered and warm. So glad they had choc milk right at the finish--that was just what I needed! Got the 3rd medal to complete the 'puzzle'. We'll be back again next year! Last updated: 2017-05-19 12:00 AM

Saturday got a late start. Teetzen's took Drew to his last soccer game so had to get their 'thank you' to Roys and saw him off. Then Taco Bell drive thru (BB and crunchy taco) snarfed down at home, finish packing/loading and head out at1:30. David had to drop his bike at Velo City so we went that way, finally got to Lambeau at 4:45, quick grabbed our bags and checked in to Best Western (Kelly, Dave, Dennis, and Sue were at Stadium View for dinner), then quick made it to Grazies 5:15 reservation for dinner. Got the Spicy Garlic pasta (added marinara), bread/oil and just drank water. Stopped at the Hilton Garden Inn where those guys were staying and had a Coors lite while visiting them. Left there at 8, brought our stuff to our room, put on our suits and soaked in the hot tub. Met a guy from St Louis doing roofing and a family whose daughter was doing her first full and her BF trying to BQ. Back to room to shower and bed by 10.
Had set alarm for 5:30 but David got up to BR at 5:15 so just got up then. Ate 1.5 Kashi honey almond bars with peanut butter and a banana w PB. Yoplait regular yogurt. Med bathroom results. Ate an orange Hammer gel at 6:30 right before we left. David also had toast w PB&J and some eggs and potatoes. Was pouring rain and only 49 so hard to decide what to wear. Drank 1/2 bottle smart water. Used triple paste to chafe areas--works better than body glide!
Decided to wear short sleeve yellow pewaukee tri top and arm warmers w marathon shorts. Wore blue shell to the start then put in David's check bag. We had gotten ponchos at the expo so I put that on. It rained pretty hard again around mile 3 for a few mins, but kept the poncho on until around mile 5 just for warmth (but was getting too warm with it). We left for the start at 6:30, got there at 6:48 and it began to pour so I stood under a sign that had a little lip sticking out while David checked our bag. He wanted to jog a warm-up so I missed him at the start. I was just behind the 4:10 pacers but didn't plan to try to keep up. Just wanted to run by how I felt. David ran the whole way with the 3:55 pacers and finished 3:54:52 (8:58 pace)
