Pre-race routine:

Entered this race for fun, because it was the first triathlon I spectated - so a good way to end my first season. Hehe, it has sentimental value to me. No particular goals, especially since this race has attracted a lot of speedy people in the past.
Up at 5:15, extra grumpy. Packed car and ate WW bagel w/PB&J on the way, with some coffee in the Grumpy mug and PowerAde. Transition was moved back because of mud, and we got an okay spot over by the run exit.

I was not nervous at all. This is standard ever since Lake T, not sure why but I like it.
Event warmup:

Forgot my number so ran back and forth from body marking to transition and then to the bathrooms. Hopped around in my wetsuit to acclimate because it's very hard to run in.
Swim
  • 17m 24s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 59s / 100 yards
Comments:

The buoys floated WAAAAAAY out this morning, and the swim distance to them was probably about a mile. People were getting nervous, but I was pretty happy because the swim has generally been my best leg. Alas, they moved them back to a normal sprint distance. The water was salty but perfectly calm. Not my best swim, I never caught a good draft and had some issues with spastic kickers. Run to transition is included, about 1:30. That was pretty painful as it was up a hill and then on rocky pavement.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really, just hope to catch more of a draft next time.
32/101 female
Transition 1
  • 01m 25s
Comments:

I felt clumsier than normal. Felt a little disoriented from the swim and was not confident getting into my shoes for some reason. 125/322 for T1
What would you do differently?:

If I'm racked next to Steve, share the foot rinse bucket. Maybe keep the other one to sit on if needed.
Bike
  • 42m 53s
  • 13.5 miles
  • 18.89 mile/hr
Comments:

This was a very annoying ride. They really needed to explain the rules beforehand or include something in the race packet. A woman kept passing me and then resting, fine, but she also rode way to the left (along with a few other cyclists) forcing passers over the yellow line in order to get by. I pass her going up a hill and think she's going to drop back like she is supposed to - so when I move back over to the right she's right there trying to pass me on the right (she actually goes "on your right"). Ugh. People were going every which way around cars and into oncoming traffic - it was basically a mess. This felt like a very dangerous bike overall due to the conduct of others on this course. No bike numbers means no penalties.
What would you do differently?:

Get faster on the bike so I can smoke these losers!
Also, BodyGlide the ladyparts, I forget EVERY time.
42/101 Female
Transition 2
  • 00m 51s
Comments:

Again, a little disorganized in transition, but I think that's just how I am (at everything really). 147/322 for T2
Run
  • 34m 44s
  • 4 miles
  • 08m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

The run is my worst leg, so of couse I go ahead and sign up for a race with a longer than standard run. Whatever. I've been running strictly zone 2 for the past month (10:30 miles), so no expectations here. Saw Steve come in for his finish on my first mile, he tells me he got hit by a car... he looked OK, but that shook me up a bit. I think that contributed to my first mile being fast at 7:46. Tried to back off a bit in the second and ended up with a ridiculous ten minute mile. Final two miles were good, but I know I could have run a faster second mile without sacrificing time in the final two.
What would you do differently?:

RUN LOTS RUN LOTS RUN LOTS

Post race
Warm down:

45/101 OA female.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The usual + a little unexpected weight gain in the past few weeks (whoops). But it's my first season, and as long as I'm improving it's okay.

Event comments:

This was a fun race and I will probably be back again next year. The volunteers were great and the race packet is nice.

As noted in my report, I do feel that certain safety issues need to be addressed, especially since this race is growing in size every year.
Specifically:
More kayaks on swim
Better traffic control on the bike
Distribution/explanation of passing and drafting rules, with bike numbers and race officiating.
