Pre-race routine:

We got into town about 3:30 and went to get our race packets. Went to the condo that we were sharing w/ John and Janelle (runnergirl). Hung out for a bit and then headed to the pasta party. We were really close so we walked over. Food was really good and it was nice to not have to deal with driving to a place to eat and have to deal with crowds. Walked back and headed to bed.Woke up at 6:30, showered (just to help wake up), drank some coffee, ate a PB &J sandwich, stretched/rolled on my foam roller, and drank some powerade. We walked to the race start and hung out at the bag check area. Met up with Sandy and her husband, and their friend. Saw BlueJack and met Bear and his wife. Also saw Lynn that did Team in Training with us last spring. She was doing her first marathon.
Event warmup:

I guess walking to the start and jumping around trying to stay warm. It was really cold!!

Comments:

This was a nice race. It was well organized, not too big, not too small. I have only run musical halfs up until this one(country music, and the rock n roll half) so I was used to giant races with huge crowds and lots of hooplah. The race runs through the residential area for pretty much the whole thing so you kind of feel like you are on a regular training run. I got really slack with my training lately but it was too late to be nervous so I just hoped for the best. I felt good until around the 6'th mile and then my IT band started bothering me on my right leg. I had to stop and stretch every mile after that, but that kept me from having pain in my knee area. Andy (my husband) and I stayed together until the 6'th mile and then he got ahead of me since I kept having to stop and stretch. Around the 10th mile my stomach started to feel a little crampy and I had to make a porta- potty pitstop (why can't they stop the time for potty breaks?) I knew by mile 10 that I wasn't going to make my goal time that I had wanted (2:15) so I just wanted to beet my time from 3 months ago. I beat it by a little over a minute. I don't feel like I was pushing overly hard, I could have definitely gone faster if it weren't for the ITBS problem. It really bothered me every time I sped up.
What would you do differently?:

Train a little more, although I have been dealing with reoccuring ITBS problems since September so that kept me back also.
Post race
Warm down:

walked around, and met up with Andy and my friends. Andrew did great! He beat his time from VA beach by more than 20 minutes. He trained much less than I did so I was pretty impressed. I think he is hanging up his running shoes though. He is happy with his time and doesn't feel like doing any more races. Ate some food, had a few beers and watched for Lynn to finish the Marathon. Andy and I napped for a few hours after, watched Iron Man Hawaii w/ John and Janelle and then we went to Isle of Palms, near Charleston and ate at the restraunt that we went to after we got married 8 years ago. It's a fondue restraunt (yum). It hadn't changed one bit. Went back to the condo after and crashed around 10:00. I was tired!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of training and ITBS.

Event comments:

I enjoyed doing this race. It was great to walk to the start and walk back after. I saw a lot of friends, the temperture was great. A little cold at the start but perfect for the rest of the time. The post race food was really good and the volunteers were great. I will definitely plan on doing it again. Can't say I would want to do the marathon though, I think I would get really bored doig that loop twice.
