Swim
Comments: Started slow. Thinking that I was completely bombing out. Thought about throwing in the towel - was coming off a back injury, but just stuck with it and actually (somehow) ended up with a decent time. Really felt heavy going out. What would you do differently?: More open water swims next summer. Transition 1
Comments: Dexterity was an issue coming out of the water. Didn't have much feeling in fingers and toes so putting on shoes and helmet were a bit of a challenge. What would you do differently?: Pick a warmer day... Practice. I'm definitely losing massive amounts of time in my transitions. Bike
Comments: I thought I did ok here but must have lost ground to the field since my swim was decent and my run wes good. Transitions were bad but not bad enough to put me in the top 55% so it must have been the bike. What would you do differently?: Train more on the bike, I guess. Transition 2
Comments: When havoc struck... I was having a sub-par T2 when it got even worse. Apparently, when I safety-pinned my race number on my singlet, I inadvertently pinned the front and back of the singlet together, which makes it rather difficult to put on. After several attempts, thinking that I was mistakenl putting my head in my sleeve, I finally ripped the pin from the back. What would you do differently?: Buy a race belt!!! Run
Comments: No rank for the run - chip had problems. Don't think that I lost time here though relative to my group and the race. Ran with the Garmin. What would you do differently?: I think I ran about as well as I could under the circumstances. Post race
Warm down: Gatorade with water (50/50 mixture). Grabbed an orange and part of a bagel. Beautiful morining. Went back out on run course to cheer on my wife. What limited your ability to perform faster: T2 was a complete disaster!! Must work on my transitions. Must have lost time here. My swim was in the top 27% overall and my run must have been about there (no splits for bike or run). I must have lost ground to the field during the T1, T2 and Bike portions of the race. Would have been interesting to see this. Also, not convinced time is accurate. We went out in the last heat, which I had recorded as 8 mins not 6 mins after elites. Event comments: Some growing pains. Drove to Darien to register the day before the race but ChampionChips were not available so had to get those on race day. Nice group and well intentioned but some glitches like the timing malfunctions so didn't get splits (relied on my watch) for run and bike. Last updated: 2006-09-21 12:00 AM

Wife (first timer) and I left house around 5:30. Whole-wheat English Muffin with light butter and Lemon-Lime Gatorade. Drove 20 mins to race. 1 Gu just 20 mins before swim.
Had done a training race the Saturday before with 10 minutes between swim and bike and 5 mins between bike and run with some pro giving tips on technique.
Had to pick up chip in line. Saw some friends. Put wetsuit on and swam in the water for about 5 minutes.
