Pre-race routine:

Set up transition area. Wait around for the race.
Event warmup:

Stretching. Bikes were racked yesterday. Not allowed in the water. Didn't have extra shoes to run.
Swim
  • 34m 42s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good swim. Not too much traffic. Since I started in the 2nd to last wave I got to pass a lot of people. That was a change for me. 10th in my age group!!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 1
  • 03m 25s
Comments:

Long run from beach to bikes. I felt great coming out of the water and ran comfortably to the transition. Usually I am very slow coming out. Transition took some time due to putting on hr monitor and Garmin. Made the mistake of putting my gel flask in my shirt first. When I got on the bike I realized my gel didn't make it with me.
What would you do differently?:

Put gel in my shirt last.
Bike
  • 1h 01m 29s
  • 20.54 miles
  • 20.04 mile/hr
Comments:

This is the first time I used the hr monitor. I tried to keep my pace down and in zone 3. It was hard at first but once I settled into a comfortable pace I kept it in the upper range and went into 4 when passing. My average speed was close to 20, even with all the turns. This was the smart way to ride and not go all out.

What would you do differently?:

Skip this race.

I would have pushed harder if I knew the course was short. Great ride though, averaging over 20 mph which was one of my season goals.

This was the worst bike course I've been on. The directors should be ashamed of the way they set it up. Too dangerous.
Transition 2
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

Good transition. Went sockless for the first time. No problems.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 56m 12s
  • 5.8 miles
  • 09m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out okay. Didn't see any mile markers. Only 3 aid stations that I can remember. I tried to keep hr down but couldn't due to the heat.
What would you do differently?:

Skip this race!!!!!!!!!!!

Post race
Warm down:

None. Race ended in the hot parking lot. Not much of a post race event. Bagels, orange slices and bananas. Got on the bus to the transition area.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Don't know, maybe the heat, maybe I wasn't ready for this race.

Event comments:

Terribly organized event from the package pick up at the Contemporary, to the bike drop off at Fort Wilderness, the short distances, lack of water stations, crappy post race, etc, etc, etc. Don't ever do this race. I spent several hours between the packet pick up and dropping my bike off at the transition area. There is no parking at the event sites so everyone is bussed.

Course: Narrow, with lots of turns in the first few miles. The course was 4 - 5 miles short. On the way out we were in the left lane of a two way street. Bikes were coming back in the same lane which made passing difficult and dangerous. Once I was on the main road out it was a good ride. Lots of people and packs and it was hard not to draft. I was almost knocked down when a girl on my right hit the cone and almost lost it. She would have taken me down with her. The last mile or so I had to contend with runners coming the other way. Difficult and dangerous to pass. Near the end the ride turned onto a narrow walk where it was impossible to pass.
