Run
Comments: I was dodging people during the first four miles - I should have lied about my anticiapted finish time so I could have gotten a better starting corral. The course was good - long straight-aways. I had my new iPod Nano, which worked out well. I had a new playlist, which played "No Easy Way Out" just as I was running towards the Art Museum. It got really hot in the sun, but there's nothing I can do about that. My strategy was to establish position in miles 1-4, maintain through miles 4-10, then see what I could do in miles 11-13, which is what I did. My splits for 4-10 are very consistant, and I did get a little faster towards the end (even though it felt like I was moving through sludge). What would you do differently?: I would devise a better drinking plan. I hadn't had the drink they serve on course for quite some time, and by the end of the race I felt that awkward "too much glucose" feeling in my stomach, which could have been a factor of the heat, as well. I need to learn more about how I, specifically, can replenish. Post race
Warm down: Walked the 1.5 miles back to the car, eating a bagel and drinking watered-down Gatorade on the way. What limited your ability to perform faster: The heat, poor race positioning and the hydration issues. Overall, I was 1 minute slower than I wanted to be, but still within my target range, so I was happy with the results. Event comments: It was a nice race...the setting was so cool. The race course took you through downtown Philly, so if you're able to take in the scenery, it would be a nice tour. I was busy weaving in-and-out of people trying to stick to my pace. Got up at 5 a.m., drank my usual pre-run shake of chocolate milk, banana and strawberries and had the usual cup of coffee. Left my apartment by 6 a.m. and had the car parked by 7 a.m. Normal stuff.
Waited in line for the port-a-pottie...not too much real "warm-up".
