Pre-race routine:

This was really messed up this race. I went on a leadership retreat the weekend/day of the race and only got 3.5 hours of sleep the night before the race. I had some sausage and a bagel with some cream cheese in the morning and then some mac and cheese about two hours before. I also caught an hour nap before the race which was really good. I have been having knee problems before so I was not sure how the run was going to go but I was so excited that I was ready to handle anything.
Event warmup:

I got there about an hour early, checked in with Beth and changed into my swim suit and got my number written on my leg. Then I went to go watch the wave ahead of me swim, and stretched a bit and worked with my camera to make sure the lighting was set right. The music kept my energy up and I became so ready to get going. Then I went and go my goggles and made sure that everything was ready. I was able to jump in the pool about 5 minutes early and do a little warm up. I also had to make sure that the wonderful volunteers knew how to use my camera.
Swim
  • 30m
  • 1700 yards
  • 01m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

I went off a little too fast in the beginning which is why I gave myself an average but I really slowed down to a speed I could keep going with for the whole thing. I got in a rhythm and just kept going. The wonderful volunteer took some pretty great pictures that I am soo happy about. I can't believe the distance once I got my results. I guess I really just kept moving and moving well. Towards the end when I caught sight of the clock a few times, I picked up my pace and got as far as I could. I was SOOO happy with my performance!
What would you do differently?:

Not much at all. I am very proud of my performance. I might slow down my start a little bit but after that, why would I mess with a good thing? :)
Transition 1
  • 10m
Comments:

We had 10 minutes to get out of the pool, collect our stuff...change if we needed to, get upstairs and then on to the bike. I had to swim in from about 10 yards out, grab my camera from the volunteer, thanks her lots and then go get out of swim suit into my tri suit and refill my gatorade bottle because I had a few sips during the swim, get my shoes for both the bike and run and then head upstairs. I put my shoes on and then got on the bike and tried to clip in and I couldn't and I had to decide not to use the clips during the bike. I also asked my volunteer to take some pictures and he was very happy to do so. He also got me some water right before I started.
What would you do differently?:

I don't know. The clip problem wasn't mine so I couldn't change that. Maybe have two water bottles so I didn't have to refill. Otherwise it went pretty smoothly.
Bike
  • 30m
  • 6.65 miles
  • 13.30 mile/hr
Comments:

I started out on the pace of doing a mile every four minutes but it was about 10 minutes into it that I realized my legs were too weak from the swim to keep up that pace. I made getting to 7 miles my goal but I wasn't even able to make it to that. If I would have gotten more sleep I bet I would have been able to do better, but I still did a great job!
What would you do differently?:

Get more sleep the night before and watch my resistance. I don't think I paced myself out right for it :( But it is also early on in the season and I have been doing a lot more running than biking and I need to even it out more!
Transition 2
  • 10m
Comments:

This went really well and I was able to stretch a bit and change shoes and walk a little bit. Then I had a chance to thank my volunteer from the bike and meet my other one and ask her to take pictures and then do about 2:30 of walking before the start of the run. The volunteers were so great!
What would you do differently?:

Not much. This transition went really well. Maybe stretch a tiny bit more to make sure I could calm the muscles as much as I could.
Run
  • 30m
  • 2.11 miles
  • 14m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

I knew this was going to be hard because of my knee. I would do walking segments of about 2 or 3 minutes and then try to run about 2 to 3 minutes and I repeated this over and over till my knee would just not stand it any more. I only got to a max speed of 5.5 mph and would walk around 3.5 to 4.0 mph. I did the best I could and I am happy with what I did considering my circumstances!
What would you do differently?:

Not have a knee injury :( But I am trying to fix that ASAP! Otherwise really considering my circumstances I am very pleased.
Post race
Warm down:

I did a little bit of walking around and got some food to put in me right away. Some banana, powerade and then some subs from Erbs and Gerbs which were really good. I also got to talk to another triathlete, Molly, and we exchanged some ideas and stuff. I also did some stretching which was very good!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My knee big time, but that only really affected me on the run. Then the sleep or lack thereof really got me, but that was just a weird circumstance.

Event comments:

My start time is 4:00 pm.
There are pictures at http://triumah07.evidon.netbut none of them are of me! :(

This is a great indoor triathlon. The volunteers are really what take this race from being okay to great. Plus the goody bag is really great too.

I am very very happy with myself here. The bike could have been better but looking at my two unusual circumstances I am very happy :) This was a great start to my race season!
