Swim
Comments: I swam the whole thing with my own version of a backstroke with an occasional side stroke to check out the rest of the field. I am learning to swim for real, very soon. What would you do differently?: Hung onto the side of the pool for the duration and saved my energy for the bike. But I cannot call myself a triathlete if I do something like that - right? Transition 1
Comments: Super easy transition (10 minutes for everyone), the locker room wasn't busy or anything. I towel dried vigorously and so getting my sports bra on wasn't as much of an issue as I worried. I managed to get to my bike with a few minutes to spare. I had already fixed the seat height and I wasn't clipping in, so it went as planned. What would you do differently?: Nothing. I got it right and had everything I needed. Working on transitions was a number one goal for me at this race, so I am happy. Bike
Comments: It was so frogging hot in there, I was in poor spirits. The bike was hard, I worn out from the swim, and it was HOT. I told the attendants that opening the doors (something they mentioned they might do later) would be good now. They needed fans or something. They just laughed and didn't do anything. I thought my head was going to explode, my face was so hot and red. What would you do differently?: Tried for a better balance of speed, cadence, and resistance. I kept it too low, trying for a higher cadence. Might not have been the right choice. Learning to swim more efficiently will help next time. Transition 2
Comments: Ran outside with my water bottle to cool off. My friend who came along said I was steaming! Cool. Got on the treadmill about a minute before the start so I could stretch out and get up to speed (literally). Run
Comments: Pretty good considering. I had planned for 3.25 or so, before I knew how bad the bike would be. Wished I could have squeaked out the last .02 for an even 3 miles. My right foot fell asleep (that's a new one) and I felt a little dizzy in the last 30 seconds, so actually I am just glad to have survived :) Post race
Warm down: Tiny bit of stretching and then just walking around, talking, cheering. What limited your ability to perform faster: No swimming skills really. Well, okay, I guess I can technically swim. Just not like an athlete. Event comments: It was my first triathlon! They will only get better from here I think. Really enjoyed meeting and getting to know the BT crew that could make it. My usual PB toast and half a banana, as much coffee as I could drink, and a bottle of water on the way in the car. It was nice because it's only about a 15 minute drive from our house and the parking situation was excellent (first heat, so we beat the crowds coming for a basketball game nearby).
Nothing! Saved my energy, I knew I would need it. I did jump in the pool so I could get my goggles situated. I'm not much of a swimmer, but I am an expert at defogging and seating my goggles.
